OK, being KNC's Local Music Director and a major local music fanboy, I have to add a few to the list:

Roman Candle (http://www.myspace.com/romancandle) - These guys worked on their last album for upwards of 6 or 7 years, and it's fantastic. Paste gave it a higher rating than the latest New York Dolls outing, so you'd do well to give it a listen if you dig pop with a country flavoring.

The Kingsbury Manx (http://www.thekingsburymanx.com) - Their last album reminds me a lot of Floyd mixed with some early prog influences. It was one of the best albums I've received as LMD, and 10008's been in superheavy rotation for a while, so if you're a fan of KNC, you've probably heard at least a few of the Manx's tunes.

Bombadil (http://www.myspace.com/bombadil) - They sound like a bunch of young hobbits got together in the deep south and recorded an EP of neat folk music. They're lot of fun live to boot.

The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers (http://www.prayersandtears.com) - Probably the most moving music I've heard since the last Marillion album. They have a folky sound with some rock and electronic elements, and they're great in concert if you can catch them around here.

Eyes to Space (http://www.eyestospace.com) - Eyes to Space could be described as a nerd-rock band, and they probably have the best rock chops in the Triangle. Their lead singer plays a home-built keytar, and they're skilled in mixing catchy music with humorous lyrics that many of us could probably relate to. The last time I saw them, they managed to get XYC DJs to rock out to their music, and as I never thought it possible for an XYC DJ to rock out, we can safely say that these guys are also a group you'll want to catch live.

The Old Ceremony (http://www.theoldceremony.com) - Formed by Django Haskins of International Orange fame, these guys dress up in suits, haul out instruments like the vibraphones and the cello, and play something that reminds me of Ben Folds with a lot of soul. Keep an eye out for their latest album... we got an advanced copy at the station and it's filled with so many good songs that it was hard to figure out what ones to put into rotation.

Dan Bryk (http://www.danbryk.com) - Dan Bryk's a transplanted Canadian who writes songs that sound like crossing Bacharach with psychedelia. I just found out about this guy, and his latest stuff is really neat sounding, kinda like XTC's Skylarking in a way.

Hotel Lights (http://www.myspace.com/hotellights) - Darren Jessee from Ben Folds Five formed this group, and their latest album is comprised of mostly acoustic, mellow stuff with a couple of rockers. However, the songwriting's really good and it's delivered in this reverent fashion that makes it a really compelling listen.

The Never (http://www.thenever.com) - Dentaldamn already mentioned them, but these guys realized that if you were going to make a high concept album, the music better damned well be able to stand up on its own, and it does. Check out 'Antarctica,' it'll change your life or at least get stuck in your head for a while.

Dexter Romweber and the New Romans - Dex was originally in a group called the Flat Duo Jets, and their unique brand of Faulknerian rockabilly convinced a young Jack White to take up the guitar. They broke up back in the late 90's but he's soldiered on and has continued to produce really great music. I saw them about a year ago at the 506, and it was like taking a trip... a very loud trip... back through time to Sun Studios while having someone that was exorcising demons doing the vocals. Easily one of the finest rock shows I've ever seen.

The Avett Brothers (http://www.theavettbrothers.com) - A bunch of these guys were in a punk band, and they got into some early country music and decided to combine the two. It resulted in something that really hadn't been attempted before, and lots of people really got into it. They recently headlined a stadium near Charlotte, making them the first local band I know to both play an arena and headline it too.

The Honored Guests (http://www.thehonoredguests.com) - Have you ever wondered what Coldplay would sound like if they didn't suck so much? Well, the Honored Guests answered that question for us with their last album, Tastes Change, which could best be described as post-rock done right. I haven't caught these guys live, but I've heard good things too.

Before you dismiss our entire music scene, go see some of those bands live. In fact, come out this Saturday to the museum of Natural History and check out Dexter Romweber, the Countdown Quartet, and Regina Hexaphone, and if you can still say that afterwards, well, I guess there ain't no shaking your opinion.

Only Midnight. Dunno how to explain them, somebody else listen to them and explain it. Sorta pop/rock music kinda. From Raleigh. Both the main guys went to UNC and I know the lead singer went to school in Raleigh for most of his life. Also rolled at Roanoke Rapids too.
