"DragFEST is set to occur on Friday, October 6, at 7:30pm in the Talley Student Center Ballroom.

DragFEST 2006 is North Carolina State University’s second annual drag competition, hosted by the Alpha Chapter of Mu Beta Psi National Honorary Musical Fraternity. The first competition in 2005 was hosted in cooperation with BGLA, Campus Arts Council and Delta Lambda Phi, and raised $610 for charity.

This year, Ms. Nellie Bottoms (2003 Queen of the Triangle) will return as Mistress of Ceremonies, along with a guest performance by last year’s winner, drag king Papa Yaya. DragFEST invites all NCSU student drag kings and queens to participate, including previous participants. The winner will receive $150, and all other contestants will receive an even share of $150 (along with any tips received while performing).

To register to participate and for more information, please visit our website, http://alpha.mubetapsi.org/dragfest

Tickets are $5 at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit a music scholarship and a GLBTQ charity.

Get your fab on!"

I helped put this together last year before I graduated. It looks like Mu Beta Psi is doing it again. I remember last time it was alot of fun, and we got alot more people than we expected which helped make money for the annual scholarship that Mu Beta Psi gives out & other charities it was raising money for, so hopefully things will go great again this year. I just saw it on facebook, but other currently active Mu Beta Psiers use tdub, so I’m sure this wont be the last word on it.

We really need people to register to particpate (we only have one contestant and 2 guest performers so far), so please, if you know anyone who does drag, or you just want to go up there and do your own thing (girls, get your guy friends to dress up!), we'd really like to have you perform. You can win $150 (plus tips) just for dressing up as the opposite gender and lip-synching (sp?) a song!

Last year, when MBPsi hosted DragFEST, it was a huge success - we raised money for our Scholarship that we give out each year to an incoming music student, and it was also a good, fun event. Hell, there was even a huge thing about it in the Technician. This year proves to be better - and hell... anyone could use an extra $150 bucks!

You should come, and bring friends and just have a good time. Or you could participate - I'm sure someone's got an outfit for you.

Wheezer, could yyou say "hell" just one more time? Please?

WE NEED QUEENS! We've had two kings sign up, but no queens! Really guys, it's really fun and hilarious to dress up (we went to the grocery store afterward last year, and have a lot of good stories now).

But seriously, we need some queens to sign up. If you know anyone you can pressure into doing, or if you know any serious student queens (especially if they made not have heard about it), get them to visit our website http://alpha.mubetapsi.org/dragfest and sign up!

Even if you don't win, you can get tips while performing, and all non-winners get a share of $150 pot (last year I believe each performer got $30). So sign up!

^^I did, well the combined UNC & all the other pic/campus blender boards, but all those colleges combined don't really rival tdub.

http://www.campusblender.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=240874

Mu Beta Psi's alpha chapter is at NCSU, but we do have a chapter over in chapel hill, so I'm sure the word will get out there too, and if need be, I live in the chapel hill/carrboro area now, so I could put up fliers.

winner from last time:

some more pics from last time:

I think there are more pics of dragfest in last years agromeck.

Vice Chancellor Tom Stafford came to the last dragfest too. Theres a pic somewhere of him surrounded by drag queens & kings that I'll try to find.

There was talk last time of the campus crusade for christ doing a protest, but they didn't show. One among their ranks though was a member of MBP and attended the event.
I wonder if they will give it another go this time?

Notice the Mu Beta Psi letter shirts in the background

Also Kelly Helder's article on DragFEST last year in the technician:

Quote :
"

Kelly Helder
There were sequins. There was spandex. And there was definitely a whole lot of fabulous.

Friday night Mu Beta Psi, the honors music fraternity, presented N.C. State's first ever dragFEST.

Seven students left all their inhibitions behind and assumed recently formulated alter egos. Kiwi Jaxon, Claire McKnight, Papa YaYa, Chlamydia Champagne, Veronica Vitaleigh and Lola came to the ballroom of Talley Student Center -- cross-dress style.

Ms. Nellie Bottoms, who reigns as Ms. Raleigh America, acted as the Mistress of Ceremonies and showed everyone what a professional drag queen can do.

He kept the audience in awe in his outrageous costumes, such as his hot pink leotard covered in sequins with a matching pink top hat, and his extensive use of expletives.

Bottoms also introduced everyone to drag etiquette where he explained, "Tipping is not a country in China, it's when we are up here sweating, you give us a dollar."

Why? "It costs a lot to look this cheap," he said.

Bottoms' protege Loreal St. Laurant also performed a few amazing routines. He even did a cartwheel in four-inch heels.

Kiwi Jaxon, known as Casey Sandix around campus, and Claire McKnight, also known as Justin White, are best friends and as Sandix says, 'We're just fierce and fabulous."

They heard about dragFEST through the BGLA list serve and simply had to compete.

"Tonight we're sistas that are really mistas," said Sandix.

When asked about their musical selections for the lip synching portion of the competition White responded, "Well I'm more diva and [he's] more hip-hop."

This became abundantly apparent through their performances.

Kiwi strutted onto the wobbly stage in Talley Ballroom as though his comment "I'm majoring in drag" was true.

He began his routine in conservative black pants and a white oxford shirt, but by the time Lilí Kim was blasting over the speakers he had changed -- on stage behind a curtain held up by some of his friends -- into a tight, black dress.

Her second performance to "It's Not Right But It's OK" by Whitney Houston brought out Kiwi's entire toe-touching body-shaking glory.

Claire's lavender ball gown and (of course) matching shoes were the embodiment of his self-described "champagne taste." The queen in white went all out in his lip synch to Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much." The audience kept the beat, clapping their little hearts out while Claire collected dollars from people's mouths.

The winner of the night was the only drag king in the show. Papa Yaya, also known as Ligaya Rouge, came out rocking a black suit, black dress shirt and a white tie accessorizing the very believable look with a dress hat and cigarette.

Even Papa's facial hair looked real -- sponged costume make-up and crepe hair stuck on with adhesive. Glued on facial hair equals dedication.

Leonard Kelly's "I'm Your Man" filled the room as Papa delivered a knockout performance full of toe-tapping, finger-snapping, lip-synching greatness.

People had to line up around the stage simply to give Papa a chance to grab the dollars they had strategically placed in their clothing. Or they tried desperately to stuff the folded money into his shirt or pants.

Once the crowd had gotten over its initial shyness, it got a little rowdy, just like it should. Papa didn't do too badly for a first-time drag king who "thought it would be a good chance to try it out."

Veronica Vitaleigh, also known as Jessie Strickland, came out after Papa with hair that took the 80s teased look to a whole new level. She called herself "Marilyn Monroe" but Bottoms elaborated it to "Marilyn Monroe on crack." It was beautiful.

Veronica preformed to "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from Moulin Rouge in a vibrant red, black and gold robe, but once "Rhythm of the Night" came out the speakers, out came her frilly leotard.

Amidst all the glitter and glory of the real homosexual queens there were Chlamydia Champagne and Lola -- the heterosexual queens.

Chlamydia lip synched to Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," but as Bottoms pointed out "you must be straight because no gay man dances like that."

Lola found out he was in the competition last Wednesday night by a friend who had signed him up.

He was a great sport and instead of backing out he dressed in drag and provided entertainment in the form of balloon animals.

Unfortunately, the path to dragFEST was a long and faltering one. The idea was proposed four years ago by Ted Gellar, public relations committee chair for Mu Beta Psi, as a parallel to Mu Beta Psi's 20-year running competitive talent show called MusicFEST. But the idea did not generate enough support until last week.

Gellar has since become dragFEST coordinator, but says when "I'm in drag -- which is never, I'm Mama Mammaries because that's what an Internet drag queen name generator told me."

Gellar has worked diligently with Susan Mazzochi, the Music Department executive assistant and one of Mu Beta Psi's advisers. He then "formed partnerships with other student organizations -- Delta Lambda Phi, BGLA and Campus Arts Council; after which we received official approval for the event from both the Music Department and ARTS NC STATE altogether."

Once approved there was still the student body to convince. Jake Goad, another member of Mu Beta Psi, came up with the idea to make an incentive for performing. So instead of having three places, all of the performers shared $150, with one winner of $100. Advocating the prospect of serious cash onto The Wolf Web attracted contenders and made dragFEST happen.

The turnout Friday surpassed all expectations by tripling the amount they hoped to reach. DragFEST earned $610 for the Mu Beta Psi freshman scholarship.

Bottoms pointed out to all at the show that this was a very important event, especially since UNC-Chapel Hill has been having an annual drag show for 10 years.

Bottoms even has a UNC-CH cheerleading outfit which he considered using for a routine during dragFEST. Next year Bottoms will be back in emcee action for the second dragFEST, and hopefully someday soon he will be wearing his State cheerleading uniform to UNC-CH.

For a final thought from Bottoms' infinite wisdom, "I'm gay AND I'm a drag queen, so really who am I to judge?"
"

We still only have two entrants! If this keeps up, each one will get $150 (the winner and then the other one would get all of the shared $150). Come on, guys! You don't have to be a pro, one of the contestants last year was a first-timer, talked into it by his friends.

If its still at two entrants, that means 1 person wins and gets $150.

Assuming you, reader of this post, are the next and only other person to sign up, then I believe your half of the remain prize money would be $75.

Being paid $75 to help a scholarship/charity just to act a couple of minutes of acting goofy & having a good time, doesn't seem like a bad deal.

We need more novices to sign up. This contest is certainly not just for people who know what they are doing, its largely for armauters/people who've never done this before.

It'll be an awesome show! The list of performers:

Contestants:
Ms. Kiwi "Watermelons" Jackson
Ms. Ivana Would
Mr. Ben Dover
Lt. Thomas Blackman

Exhibition Performers:
Ms. Nellie Bottoms
Ms. Alexis Divareaux
Mr. Papa Yaya

Each person will be performing at least twice, so it will definitely be a lot of fun!

Also, many of the Brothers of Mu Beta Psi are dressing in drag to attend the show, and it's encouraged that others do, too.
