I just got a 1986 honda civic (carbureted) and I am trying to get it to run. Every time I start it it runs untill it comes down from high idle, then cuts off. I have adjusted the float level so it definately gets enough fuel, and it does not seem like an ignition problem. I have checked for vacuum leaks, but have not found anything obvious. If I keep the idle up by keeping my foot on the gas it will run indefinately. What else should I check?

So have you taken the carb apart (requires bravery on the part of the dingaling who dares venture amongst that wild jungle of vacuum lines) and cleaned everything?

Is there an anti-dieseling solenoid that's not functioning or gummed up? How about the air-fuel solenoid. Engine won't run at idle if that's stuck closed.

If you're still wondering about vacuum leaks, you really need to get you a can of carb cleaner (the flammable kind; MAKE SURE OF THIS) and spray bursts along the base of the carb and around vacuum line junctions while you have somebody keeping this puppy running. Noticeable increase in rpms? You have found yer leak.
