1.)now instead of watching games to see a good game or see one team win and do well, everyone just cares about individual performance, the team aspect of a fans perspective of how the game is played has now been permanently skewed.

2.)on the other hand, it enables people to get more into ALL games and learn the individuals that previously they may not have known or knew were as good as they really are.

plz to discuss
im going with 1, i hate watching a game and hear people say cmon Parker I need more POINTS out of you, but I hate them steelers.

3) NFL has been pretty heavily about individual performances since long before fantasy became populer.

Really, I'd go more with 2, b/c I still pull for my team, but now follow more games/players/teams than I might otherwise.

I think it increases interest in football. This is my first year in fantasy, and now I watch more games, keep watching even when the outcome is decided, know more about players and their performances, and think about football seven days a week. Now I care about what happens to 32 teams rather than 1-2.

In any case, THROW IT TO MILLER, YOU FAGGOTS!

i think its like everything else, a few people do it the right way and the majority do it the wrong way.

i think its a worthless thing to do for the average person, i say just watch the games have fun and get back your life and stop trying to make more out of something than it should be

It has done nothing but good for the NFL and it's market.

You now have people who didnt really care about the NFL paying attention to games just to see if the players that are on their team do well.

My wife was in a fantasy league last year...and now she loves the NFL. She hated it before because she said that unless her team was playing, she had nothing to care about.

While not all situations are like hers, thats just a small example of how fantasy sports only extend the reach of the ever grabbing TV markets.

gg, fantasy sports.

well up to this point people had different reasons for likeing the NFL
now a big majority of them watch to get their serving of points
and these people have now a big influence on the NFL and football shows and the internet ...
and so far their influence is reduced 32 teams to a buchn of indiviuals

i want to pittsburgh to win with bad defense and willie parker score all the points and matt jones to not catch a ball and both teams combine for less than 37 points...

so that keeps me watching the game

biiiiiiiiaaaaaaaahhhh (ala dean and porter)

yeah, you are stupid if you think Fantasy Football has been bad for the NFL. People still cheer for their teams overall but now instead of one game being important almost all of them are.

Same thing with gambling, betting on the NFL is a HUGE part of what makes it successful and you dont hear people bitching about betting on teams aside from their favorite.

My major qualm with the fantasy world is that is has created these armies of clowns that constantly chime into any NFL conversation with "Ooh I have (insert player name) on my fantasy team!!!!" (what I mean is that is all they contribute), when they probably couldn't name 3 other players from that team. I'm not trying to sound like some kind of football snob, but please.

That and when some douche lucks out and wins a casual league, they automatically position themselves as some kind of expert on NFL football.

It's why I took a break from it for a couple of years. Maybe I have just had bad experiences.

at least with gambling you win money.

what do you get with fantasy? points? thats pathetic. are the points transferable to dungeons and dragons? you know... for the offseason.

^^yeah, sounds like just bad experiences, I always make sure the peeps in my league know their shit inside and out, but I would say for the most part Fantasy leagues help people learn more players than they would without them.

^ and thats why I only do pay leagues that are at least $50 a person with 10+ teams in it... free fantasy leagues suck 95% of the time.

Exactly.

It gives people a reason to watch shitty teams (Raiders, Browns, Packers, etc.) and shitty games.

And it also creates interest in players that you'd otherwise never hear about--the media spends a ton of time harping on a few standout players, but FF introduces people to a ton of others.

And hell, it's fun.

so with that logic you could have fantasy *anything* and it would make people interested

my point is i dont care what fantasy people do on their own time
just dont tell me about it, i dont care
and dont call or email my favorite shows and talk about your fantasy points
dont wear any clothes thas say "fantasy football" on them
and you must register your name and address
in this online directory http://www.fantasyfags.com
thats all

Every year, some faggot creates this same thread. same old shit.

Prove it. Since you've become a mind-reading psychologist, why don't you tell us how you know that people don't care about the team aspect (or ever did)? Are you arguing that now, caring for individuals on teams you don't like somehow diminishes your appreciation of your own team?

If so, that's baseless nonsense you have pulled out of your ass. If not, what's the problem with people caring about other individuals in addition to their own team?

Really, what the fuck are you expecting? Even if I am playing against fantasy panthers players, I still want the panthers to win. In my estimation, people don't talk or care about the actual football less than they did before -- they just talk about fantasy more, in addition. Furthermore, item #2 has obviously helped the game out a lot, while item #1 is just your own aesthetic pet peeve. You do the math.

I don't agree with this at all

I still pull for my teams to win, even if I don't have their players in my Fantasy leagues, and I'm much happier when my teams win than win my Fantasy teams win.

I hate the fact that I can't talk to someone, like at work, about a game without them bringing up their damn fantasy football team and how player suchandsuch should have had 15 more yards.

I definitely think it has totally fucked up people's perception of how good players are at their position... all people think now is points=good.

Regardless of fantasy points, I still root for my team. Like last night, I have Hines Ward, but I was still pulling for the Jags. Had Hines caught a TD late in the game to make it a 9-7 loss instead of a 9-0 shutout, I wouldn't have complained though

I play in a couple fantasy leagues but I would take losses every single week if it meant my Panthers did well

course so far this year the Panthers are 0-2, and I'm 2-0 in both my FF leagues

I do agree it takes away from some of the "watching a game to see a good game" aspect, but it definitely familiarizes you with some players you might not normally see...I mean I know Antonio Bryant is a good WR for the 49ers...if I didn't play FF I might not know shit about the 49ers since they have sucked the last couple years...except of course they got Manny

There are always pros and cons with every event, change, action, and reaction. It does get annoying to hear a person scream "c'mon Eli...I need another touchdown"...then at the same time in anger "No, don't throw it to Shockey-he is not on my team."

FF def has changed the way alot of people view the game, but at same time it has added more excitement and made NFL even more of a phenom in so many mediums. If you love football, you can remove the negative and enjoy the game. However, there is nothing wrong with a person who only cheets for a particular player on a team.

last night one of my buddies had Leftwich and his opponent had Reggie Williams

also I was done but my opponent had Hines and I was only up 4 points going into the game

it was more exciting than the 9-0 stomping

It does add excitement to games, ^your right. If it is a low scoring defensive game or a complete blow out, the individual aspect can make the game more interesting and enjoyable to watch.

After a few weeks, I'm a little torn on the issue. When the Panthers play Cleveland today, I'm not just going to be thinking "Go Panthers!", I'm going to be sitting in front of the TV with my laptop checking on the Giants, Saints, and Colts. This past week, I've spent much more times thinking about my four fantasy teams than my Panthers or Wolfpack. I want my real ones to win of course, but in some ways my fantasy teams have become more important. I have no control over who Chuck Amato plays, or whether Chris Gamble throws a lateral in a kickoff return. But my fantasy teams are a reflection of me and my choices, and it decides some bragging rights with my friends. Does this mean my view of the NFL is ruined or I'm a bad fan? I don't know. Maybe I do view things differently, but at least I'm paying attention.
