You have to do the set up right or else the moisture will go into the wood and not the cigars. You MUST used distilled water. You can find it in the grocery store in gallon jugs. Distilled, not spring water. This is crucial.

To set it up, wipe down the inside with distilled water until it will hold no more water. Then close it up overnight. The next day, do the same thing with wiping it down until it will not take any more water. Then let it sit closed overnight again. Then do this a third time, let it sit overnight one more time, and you should have a well seasoned humidor.

Go to a cigar shop and get one of the gel moisture things. They work the best.

Use a digital hygrometer, the mechanical ones are all crap.

I suggest going to see George at Pipes by George on Hillsborough street. Go down past the IHOP and he's on the right. Parking is just past Jade Garden on the right.

j&r has a few on their webiste, i bought me one that's a tube with some weird ass crystals in it, and i have to add propylene glycol to it, and it works ok until you forget to refill it. if you have the money, buy an electric one

While it is possible to add too much water during the set up, the gel moisture thing will take in that extra humidity and keep your humidor right around 70. I used to have problems with my humidor until I got one of those gel things. Now it's trouble free.

hey I got the exact same combo this summer and I love it... I bought mine for a little more than your deal so yeah I would go for it.

Make sure you get an extra bottle of butane because that tripple burner will go through fuel really quick. Get the expensive type of Butane because its more refined and wont clog up the lighter or something. It may be all BS but if you have a lighter that retails for $80 you might as well go for it.


I would go to JR Cigar's website and go through their "Cigar University" FAQ just because there is a lot of little things about about setting up a humidor there.

I have the same humidor as you....I wiped it twice and used the gel in the sponge. I don't have a digital meter....but mine works great....The Cigars are have a perfect ammount of moisture. Enjoy it :-)

montecristo white labels are a pretty good mild to medium bodied smoke....I would stay away from CAO unless its the cameroon because CAOs are mostly advertising.....Good mild to mediums are going to be AVO, Davidoff, Ashton Classic/ Heritage pure sol, also griffin's are good as well

Rocky Patel Vintage 1990

Can't hardly find them anymore, but they are the best in my book. They made a 1992 vintage as well, but the 1990 vintage is better, IMHO.

so.... i ended up doing a mix of different instructions i saw on various sites.

I did a very light damp wipe of the inside of the humidor. Filled up the humidifier, let it drain for an hour, and placed it inside. I also put a shot glass full of water inside the humidor.

I'm planning on watching it over the next couple of days.

How soon do you think I can put cigars in there? I'm worried that the cigars will soak up moisture instead of the wood if I put them in too early, and end up being wetter than they're supposed to be.

Any thoughts?

Hold onto the cigars for about a week and a half while you season the humidor. The cigars won't begin to dry out for awhile if they are in a tight cedar box. If if they do start to get a LITTLE dry, they will recover once inside the humidor. Everybody prefers a different humidity in theirs, given the size and how packed the humidor is. I find that 70 is optimal for me instead of the standard 68-69. You can adjust by throwing extra humidifer tubes, jars, cards, etc in there as needed on top of the regular humidifier.

i was told to NEVER wipe down the interior of my humidor with water. instead, i was told to place a glass of distilled water inside for it for 8 hrs and let the wood soak it in.

this conflicts with some other stuff posted on this thread. what should i go by?

yeah.. that's why I did a very light wipe...

some people say that the wood can swell and crack if you soak it with water, other people say you have to completely saturate the wood to season it

i'm hoping that doing neither will work
