the most popular right now seem to be age of mythology and warcraft 3 but there some older underated titles like Total Annhilation and the moon project 9/25/2006 1:47:21 AM |

TA
War3 was pretty fun though too. It's pretty hard to say -- best how? Most fun? Best gameplay?
War3 was tons of fun because i played with my suite back in the day. Not sure if I'd say its the best strat game though, I dislike blizzard's inclination towards frantic micromanagement 9/25/2006 3:44:38 AM |

I'll second Rome: Total War and the upcoming Medieval 2 is going to be tight.
For an RTS, Company of Heroes rocks.
But if you're looking for best all-time, that'd be Starcraft with TA a close second.

I LOVED Total Annihilation, and played it constantly, And to this day I think it has the best air combat out of any RTS except the
But the only thing about it I didn't like was it seemed like all the units felt too similar, it was just "Spam all the tanks and kbots you can and send them to the base" So I don't know if I would call it the best ever.
But it is extremely fun, if someone hasn't played it I definitely recommend it, you can find it and the expansion at wal-mart for like $10, its old as hell but the graphics have aged well.
I'm definitely looking forward to Supreme Commander. 9/25/2006 12:14:01 PM |

Amen.
It does kinda have base building as in your cities, but they are only in the actual battles during seiges, and really the walls are the only things that matter. Dont know if that is going to change in Medieval 2, and I dont know how it could. But i do know that the surrounding layout of the land will not be a cookie cutter square like in RTW.
But yea, Total War series ftw. You got multiple lvls of strategy with armies, buildings, diplomats, navy, spys, assasins, religion, generals. 9/25/2006 1:17:03 PM |

Unofficial sequel to TA, made by the same people but a different company. It isn't really the same universe, but the storyline is very similar, as is the base construction idea (a commander unit with nanobots that can turn raw resources into an army in a few minutes).
It is also on a HUGE scale.9/25/2006 1:19:03 PM |

The Warhammer 40k adaptation done by Relic was beautifully done. In general, I think Relic has been knocking them out of the park when it comes to the RTS genre. 9/26/2006 1:48:46 PM |
