in war. i'm wondering what it's like to be stationed over there in the Middle East, etc. I'm assuming its really stressful. However, people are still signing up. Other than serving your country proudly, there most be a even more incentive nowadays.

people who've been there SPEAK !!! I'd like a full account.

It blows. Leave the entire area off your travel plans. Unless you can afford one of those Dubai island-states.

I don't really have time to post all about it, was there something specific you wanted to know about?

Ok, at the moment, it's hotter than just about anything you've ever felt, including the inside of your car on a hot ass day. The wind is an absolute motherfucker, blowing the finest sand through clothes, tents, coverings, and getting in every possible nook and cranny. Thankfully, electricity, air conditioning, and PX facilities have arrived and are functioning normally, they sure as hell were not when I was there. Some days you wake up and feel like you are on Mars. The sun is so fucked up looking through a mile of refracting sand.. Looks a lot like this:

Throws off your whole damn day, feeling like the world is going to end at any second.

Or sandstorms, another joy of the desert. Not unlike shit you'd see in the Mummy movies.

Yes, that is what it looks like, no that is not me.

Wanna see inside that? No you don't. But this is what it looks like..

It's blessedly cooler for a moment, meaning that you can actually perspire. Perfect! Now high velocity sand particles can sting the shit out of you, and now STICK to you!

Speaking of sweating, crossing your arms for a moment leaves a ring around the inside of your elbow from skin on skin contact perspiration, salt rings on your cover, gear straps, knees, and everywhere else... what's not to like?

my husband just got back in march...he said he would go again in a heartbeat, reasonings being that he'd rather it be him than someone else and that if something happened to one of his buddies and he wasnt there he would wonder if it would have been different if he would have been there

as far as things he told me was just that it was extremely hot (when he got back to the US in march it was 80 degrees and he was shivering)...they got hit by IED's almost daily...they would go on several missions not knowing what was going on or when they were coming back...i actually got to watch the video that was taken from their truck (pretty scary shit)

it also depends where you are stationed there...from what i hear Al Asad is skate but places like Ramadi and Fallujah suck ass

Read Jarhead

Granted they completely rearranged the work for the movie, the read is worth it because

1) you realize what a liar Swofford is

2) understanding 70% of the original work is bullshit also helps you understand what kind of psychology there is in different situations
