I have Ubuntu on one of my laptops. I used to have it connected to the internet via wireless access (someone else set it up for me). However, since I've moved I no longer have wireless and I can't just plug in the ethernet cable to the laptop and connect? RR is my internet provider. I'm looking for some quick help if anyone knows how do this. I've looked online, but it hasn't really helped much. Thanks.

run "sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome" in a terminal

I'm fairly sure thats the right one. install it, reboot. (or run 'network-manager-gnome' (I think), reboot is easier)

it should give you a new icon in your 'notification area' (standard two overlapping computers)
click it, it'll give you a choice of networks to connect to (both wired and wireless) and allow you to use passwords for encrypted signals

edit: oh. if you just want wired, go System/Administration/Networking
make sure your Ethernet is enabled, possibly go ahead an disable your wireless if you dont need it. if its already active, hit properties and make sure its DHCP. automatic is usually best
