No, really I did. I had him in a new hamster cage from Petco and he escaped. I'm really not sure how he escaped because it is a secure cage and no doors or latches were opened. I thought he had either fallen off the computer desk (where his cage is) and died or he had gotten outside before I realized he was gone. However, last night I left a grape out and this morning it was half eaten and there was a pile of hamster poop near the computer desk. Anyway, does anyone have any good ideas on catching him? I would move the computer desk out (it's on wheels), but I'm scared I will run over him. I have several places he could hide in our living room (behind the chair, couch, entertainment center, etc), so if he runs out then he's just gonna hide somewhere else. 9/30/2006 2:18:52 PM |

If he likes grapes, set up some under an upside down basket, that’s propped up by something easy to knock over. That way he might cause himself to become trapped, or you could have a string on the stick propping it up to pull it from a distance if he were to come out maybe? 9/30/2006 2:24:00 PM |

A laundry basket, a few k'nex, and a piece of string worked to capture my cat when I was young... I think the grape trap has potential. 9/30/2006 3:14:58 PM |

I've always used an aquarium or bucket or some kind of smooth sided container that they can't get out of once they fall in with a stack of books or ramp littered with food leading up to the container. I've caught every hamster every time using this method. It's never taken more than two days to get them.

If you stay up late at night when he starts coming out looking for food and shit you will probably see him.
Mine used to get out all the time but the dog always sniffed it out and then I would catch it. 9/30/2006 3:52:02 PM |

I also use the bucket technique. Build a ramp or staircase up to the top of a bucket with books, etc. Put little pieces of food on the ramp/staircase. Then at the bottom of the bucket, put really soft cloth and lot's of food. He'll climb up and fall in and won't be able to get back out. 9/30/2006 4:23:19 PM |

I had a friend in elementary school who did what bottombaby said - she used a mixing bowl I think, and just pushed it up really close to the side of the couch so the hamster crawled down, slid in, then couldn't get out 9/30/2006 4:48:10 PM |

More than likely he is in a corner under something somewhere. Mine would always be in the same exact corner when it chewed its way out of its cage when I was little. I dunno why it wanted out so bad, that thing was a fucking hamster hotel, 3 stories, more shit on it than I ever got as a kid, spoiled ass hamster. His name was Nippy. Try to guess why. 9/30/2006 7:18:30 PM |

update:
We tried everything, the book stacking to a bucket seemed like the best trap, so we did that for 3 nights. No success. However, I was sitting on the couch Tuesday night around 2am doing homework and the little bastard came scooting out from under the chair beside me and started nibbling my toenail polish. So, after a quick game of hold the couch up and trap the hamster in a bucket, he was captured. Thanks for all the ideas! 10/5/2006 11:27:39 AM |

Now you get the chance to vacuum up all the little rice turds he's left on the carpet and anywhere else he's been, unless you like stepping on them with some bare feet. 10/5/2006 6:59:49 PM |

funny 2 of the hamsters in my classroom escaped last night. one came running out to see me this morning during 1st period. the other is still MIA. i left his cage out on the floor when i left today, with the doors open so maybe he'll be back in it the morning (worked with a hamter of mine before).
so lets hope we find him. luckily he's contained in the one classroom and he's fat enough to survive for awhile. both of them like being handled so if we see him it shouldn't be hard to catch him.

i'm sending out a schoolwide email to see if anyone has seen him
pray i find the little guy
they've been so good. never biting any students and still getting along with eachother ( so strange for 2 male hamsters to live together in peace) 10/8/2006 11:15:29 PM |

"Jerry" came back. He ran out during 1st period and we caught him.
He spent the whole day stuffing his cheeks and trying to break out of his cage. guess he thought of his capture as only a pit stop 10/11/2006 9:33:24 PM |
