real men know october is the manliest month of all

so here's a thread for the playoff discussion and/or calling mets players and fans whatever racial, ethnical, or sexual slur you can think of

my predictions

yankees over tigers, 3-1
best yankees lineup since 96, if not longer
their pitching is pretty sketchy, but they can drop 10 on anyone
the tigers stopped playing in august

twins over a's, 3-1
johan (who might pitch twice) and radke are pitching out of their minds, and the pen is pretty good
the twins are coming in really hot
the a's never win shit

dodgers over mets, 3-2
you're goddamn right
pitching wins playoffs, dodgers have the best 3 starters in the playoffs
the mets have been on cruise control for weeks, that's always dangerous

cardinals over padres, 3-2
cards are super banged up
their pitching is so bad that jeff weaver still has a job, izzy is out
padres have peavey and probably the deepest pen in the playoffs

yankees over twins, 4-1
by the ALCS the yankees will be in full-on assault mode, 20 runs per game minimum

dodgers over cardinals, 4-2
again, dodgers have the pitching

yankees over dodgers, 4-1
the yankees are unstoppable

without the impending heartbreak of the braves getting smeared by the fucking astros this october, i'm looking forward to the playoffs for the first time in a long, long time

go dodgers

Try and be objective. The Mets are a better team then the Dodgers. Plain and simple. Look at the pitching the last month of the year. El Duque is under 2.00 and that is better then any pitcher in the playoffs. Glavine is under 3.00, which is better then Maddux. Kuo will probably beat the Mets in game 3. Then Maine will win Game 4 and it's over.

The Mets lineup is FAR superior to the Dodgers; even moreso with Nomar with his strained ribcage...

ALCS: Yankees

NLDS: Mets, Padres

I am disgusted by the prospect of another "Subway Series", but the smart man is placing that bet.

so its gonna be maddux/glavine on thursday night game 2 in new york. i guess this matchup seems epic to me b/c im a braves fan and its unfortunate that the fsu game is the same night. i'll take maddux in game 2 b/c he's been nasty as of late and glavine hasn't pitched well in the playoffs for a whle now. i'll also take the dodgers in the series b/c pitching does win 5 games series and the mets don't have a lot of it. im seriously considering staying home to watch this one and im glad to see that even though the bravos didn't make the playoffs this year that they will be well represented as far as i'm concerned.

I didnt REALLY follow baseball this year i mean i followed enough to win my fantasy league (+$200 holla) but thats different than following teams. but heres what i think about the teams.

1) yanks: Awesome lineup, mediocre pitching. Experience. I KNOW hitting doesnt win in October. In my head i KNOW this but i can not pick against them to save my life. In a month we'll probably be saying NYY didnt have any pitching they had no chance but as of right now goddammit i cant pick against them.

2) tigers: Pitching. They have pitching. Pitching always wins in October. But you're asking me to wrap my head around a team that hasnt been good since what '87? And a team with a BAD playoff lineup. I mean seriously i cant do it. I cant take Det and look myself in the mirror even though they have the elements of a playoff team. Call me a non-believer who would believe if he paid attention to history.

3) Twins: One guy. They have one guy. if htey didnt have Santana no one would know Minnesota had professional sports. He's the best player in baseball. How far can he carry them? If he goes 6-0 with a 1.62 ERA they can win the series. Or they could just lose every game he doesnt start.

4) A's. I love the A's i really do. But this is a horrible postseason team. They cant hit and their pitching isnt spectacular. Least likely team to advance from the AL i think.

NL:

1) Dodgers: Its tough not to pick the Dodgers. They are just due to have a good postseason and they have the best hitting/pitching combination.

2) Mets: The Mets have been on cruise control for 4 months. Their pitching is pretty much smoked and their lineup has been ice cold recently. I just think the pressure wears on the Mets and they flame out. Clearly, they have the most talent in the league but i just dont think they're coming out of the NL.

3) Padres: Decent pitching, decent hitting. They CAN win the NL but they probably won't. And its a good thing because they'd get their fucking ass beat by any team in the AL.

4) Cardinals: Dead in the water. Horrible pitching, horrible hitting. You take Pujols/Carpenter off this team and they are Brewers.

Tigers over Yankees 3-2

There is no rationale in this pick. I just want the Yankees to lose. No World Series rings since Clinton was President continues for this team.

Twins over A's 3-0

The Twins have been awesome non-stop for five months.

Mets over Dodgers 3-1

I just think the Mets are a better team than the last month shows and that the Dodgers just aren't that good.

Padres over Cardinals 3-2

The Cardinals' late skid and injuries hurts their psyche and the Padres will take care of them.

Tigers over Twins 4-3

Classic ALCS will be fought by these two teams that fought all season.

Mets over Padres 4-2

Will be workmanlike.

Tigers over Mets 4-2

Who had Detroit in March?

Twins over A's in 5
*Two good teams...but Santana will be pitching game 1 and game 5, both in the dome. The Twins are 2nd in the league in hitting, 2nd in the league in pitching, and 3rd in the league in defense. They will be too much for the A's

Yankees over Tigers in 4
Nate Robertson is the type of pitcher to give the Yankees trouble in game 1 at home. However he will be opposing Chien-Ming Wang, who is 11-3 at home in 06. Yankees may have trouble with Verlander in game 2, and if Mussina is off of his game, it will be a long night. But Rogers poses no threat, and Bonderman couldnt beat his meat in the last 5 weeks of the season.

Cards over Padres in 3
Pujols is too much for the Padres...and money in the playoffs. David Wells is a big post-season pitcher, but those days appear to behind him. Look for 3 blowouts in favor of the cards.

Dodgers over Mets in 5
I dont like the mets pitching when matched up with the red-hot dodgers. Look for a big series out of Nomar, who tradionally has not done well in the playoffs and is due. Glavine had good numbers padded by the weak NL East...but will not fair well against a hungry dodgers team when having to face them twice.

Yankees over Twins in 5
If my previous predictions are accurate, Santana should be in line to pitch game 3 or 4, which would be in the Metrodome, hence the Twins lone victory in this series. Look for a big series from A-Rod, who has owned the Twins since becoming a yankee (including the 2004 postseason, in which Alex had 2 game winning hits in the 5 game series). Boof Bonser against a lineup that features the number 2 hitter in the american league batting second, and the number 3 hitter in the league batting 9th.....scary.

Dodgers over Cards in 5
Again, I like the Dodgers flare for the dramatic....and while I like Pujols, I dont think the Cards have the pitching to stop the Dodgers in the playoffs. Speed will be a big key in this series for the dodgers.

Yankees over dodgers in 6

In one of those old-time matchups, I feel the Yankees will have the advantage. Brad Penny may give them trouble, as does Derek Lowe (see 2004 ALCS, Game 7), but the Yankees lineup is simply too good. With Matsui and Sheffield back in and back at full strength, no one has a chance. Yankees bring home their 27th World Series Title.

Most of the people in that thread were picking them to win the World Series.

Still not sure what happened to them this year...

I just didnt like the Chisox to duplicate their success and didnt even know who Francisco Liriano was. And to be honest i didnt even know Detroit still had a baseball team. I thought they moved to Puerto Rico or something when the auto industry tanked.

nah, the Dodgers won the division too. Just like the Red Sox did last year. Head to head isn't a tiebreaker in baseball with respect to the division. Only to determine the wildcard.. They are both officially the winners.

FWIW, I hit the same 5 of 6 in that thread that rally did.

Quote :
"
AL East - Yankees (3 games back right now, so i dont wanna hear that i did this after the season started)

AL Central - Indians (fast start meaningless, woulda been my pick preseason love the balance)

AL West - Athletics (biased because I'm the biggest A's fan in the world)

NL East - Mets (hate the Braves and they are due)

NL Cental - Cards (I've got $720 riding on them to win the div, so this is the one I really care about)

NL West - Dodgers (This one is a bit of a crapshoot b/c both LA and SF are injury prone)"

I know $720 isn't a lot of money or anything, but I guess it'll buy me groceries for a few months.

As in, Rallydurham's PREDICTION, Ernie's PREDICTION. NOT RalldyDurham's PREDICTIONS.

I reiterated this with:
Quote :
"I will, right here and now, promise you that your prediction will be wrong. "

All I was fucking saying in that thread was that your "picks", as a WHOLE, as well as 95% of all other WHOLE picks would be wrong. You were wrong, Cleveland didn't win the AL Central. The Dodgers didn't win the NL West. What the fuck do you want from me? If it was a competition to correctly pick the Division/Wild Card champions, you'dve lost. Quit bringing this shit up, you know what I meant.

Quote :
"nah, the Dodgers won the division too. Just like the Red Sox did last year. Head to head isn't a tiebreaker in baseball with respect to the division. Only to determine the wildcard.. They are both officially the winners."

No, the tiebreaker determines who won the division. The Padres did. Check out the news releases.

Yanks over Tigers 3-1.
Tigers are too young and Yankees just have an awesome lineup.

Twins over As 3-2.
Basically homefield wins for the Twins. Every game is close, these teams are a lot alike.

Dodgers over Mets 3-2.
When has Glavine's teams ever won in the postseason? Dodgers are hot as hell.

Cardinals over Padres 3-2.
Carpenter wins 2 starts and Pujols carries the team. Padres still don't have enough starting pitching.

Yankees over Twins 4-2.
Yankees lose to Johan but kill the rest of the Twins staff.

Cardinals over Dodgers 4-3.
Pujols again is the best player in baseball and the Dodgers will run out of steam soon.

Yankees over Cardinals 4-2.
The N.L. really has no chance whoever it is against the A.L.

Here I'll do my predictions since I haven't and then leave this thread alone for real:

Yankees over Tigers in 3
The Tigers have been absolutely abysmal recently and the Yankees are the best team in baseball. With Randy Johnson likely to go Game 3 that is the only chance the Tigers have at salvaging one game.

Oakland over Twins in 5
In what will turn out to be the best series in the 2006 postseason the A's will win it on the back of a strong Game 5 by Barry Zito, which will earn him more money then God in the offseason.

Mets over Dodgers in 4
The only way the Dodgers win is if Lowe outpitches El Duque and the Mets pen in Game 1. I don't see that happening and the Mets offense came alive at the right time this past week. The only loss coming against Kuo, the young lefty.

Padres over Cardinals in 4
Unless Carpenter can pitch on very short rest then the Padres will win in 5. The Cardinals, much like the Tigers, are dead in the water. Momentum doesn't mean a whole lot to me but complete lack of anything resembling pitching outside of Carpenter does.

Yankees over A's in 6
6 games? Maybe not even that long. Zito never pitches well against the Yankees and the offense simply isn't strong enough to hang. The only prayer they have is if Rich Harden really is back and Loaiza has a chip on his shoulder.

Mets over Padres in 6
Subway Series, Part II. It's what the world hates but New Yorkers love. Peavy is a righty so he won't worry the Mets offense all that much. The Padres offense just isn't good enough to hand with the Mets.

Yankees over Mets in 7
They had the best records in all of baseball. They were 3-3 during the season series. They had identical home and away records. It only makes sense this would go all the way. In the end the pressure of playing Game 7 in Yankee Stadium will be too much for the kids and the first timers in the playoffs to overcome.

Breakdown

ALDS
The Tigers have gone from Comeback Story of the Decade to just another disappointment in the Big D. Detroit has nothing left in the tank. If they can get swept by the lowly
Royals, not even a miracle from heaven can save them. Their pitching is suspect. Kenny Rogers’s postseason record speaks for itself. Nobody knows which Justin Verlander will show up. It all equals doom for the Tigers.

The Moneyball Series will once again go to the Twinkies because they just have more batting power than Oakland.

NLDS
The Metropolitans sweep through the overrated Dodgers as the Jungle Karma turns into the Jungle Jinx.

The Friars have their way with the least deserving postseason team. For all the hype LaRussa gets year after year, he is the most overrated postseason figure now that the Braves are playing golf.

ALCS
After a one-year postseason hiatus, the Twins finally get revenge on the Bronx Bombers. Everybody thinks the Yanks will win it all in a cakewalk, but they will be in for a rude awakening when the Bombers’ pitching breaks down and A-Rod is joined by various others in failing to come through offensively. Also, the Yankees are cursed.

NLCS
The absence of Pedro Martinez will haunt the Metros as Piazza plays a major role in beating his former team.

World Series
The Young Guns Battle goes to San Diego by process of elimination

actually if you guys look into the numbers, the tigers crush yankee pitchers not named wang, johnson and rivera.

Without Randy Johnson pitching in this series, we have a great shot.

So, I'll pick Detroit in 5
Minnesota in 4

San Diego in 5
Los Angeles in 5

LA in 6
Detroit in 7

Detroit in 7
