Just for curiousity's sake, how many of you who are current NCSU students have laptops whose batteries were part of the recalls? ITD is interested in knowing what kind of impact this has had on campus.

I am one. I have a dell, the battery was recalled and I never exchanged it.

^^ IBM has a tool that can be run on the network to determine which machines are impacted by the recall. They don't have to be on the domain but they do have to be on the network (pulling a NCSU IP).

The tool seems more based towards companies that use IBM for all their employees but it might be something worth looking into since NCSU bookstores sell IBM's.

i dont live on campus but my laptop has the battery recall...ive never had a problem with it however, after 2 years and draining the battery everyday at campus without ac power, my battery cant hold as long of a charge as it used to...so this is good for me because we get brand new batteries now!

^yeah, theres a website on lenovo.com/battery or something like that where you just type in the number on the battery and it says if you need a new one or not.

Yes, companies that issue recalls for defective and potentially dangerous products and provide safe replacements for free suck.

Dell does indeed suck, but in all fairness they reacted quite swiftly and recalled the batteries very early.

Yeah, all these companies are doing the prudent thing and recalling the batteries. The percentages for 'exploding batteries' have to be so very small. I doubt that it has ever been recreated in a lab environment. But hey, it's consumer safety.

Why does Dell suck? Because they used Sony batteries that are in 90% of notebooks? HP, Lenova, Apple, Dell, etc all use Sony batteries. The only exception was which production line the batteries came off of, hence why all the above mentioned except HP did recalls.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only two or three companies that produce their own batteries for their computers, Sony obviously being one of them.

did anybody do the battery exchange with a powerbook?

i'm curious about how long it took you to receive your replacement battery -- apple says 4-6wks, did it actually take that long?
