I just was recommended for a position as an assistant teacher for the third grade at a local elementary school. While I'm extremely excited for this, I see it as temporary because I want to go back to school in January and get my Elementary Ed license but continue as an assistant until I'm licensed.

My main concern is going to a school that isn't terribly far away where I can get my licensure without paying a ridiculous amount. I live in Garner and have looked into Shaw, Meredith, NCSU, NCCU, and Weslyan.

Has anyone done this? How long did it take? Where did you go?

I know NCSU will be able to help you. I don't know how we stack up against the other schools, though.

And if it's licensure only I'm pretty sure it takes one year; a semester of classes and a semester of student teaching. I think the Masters w/ lincensure is two.

Actually, NCSU just started their program and they don't have a licensure only option for elementary ed.

Everyone keeps sayinh NCCU but Durham is a 40 minute drive!

Shaw and Peace and Wesylan's websites are all very vague.

Yeah, that have licensure for Language Arts and Math and Science for middle and then high school but unless it's critial needs (math, science) you have to be working at a school currently to enroll in the program.

After getting my transcript evaluated, Phoenix Online gave the least amount of courses (5) compared to NCSU and other schools (7-9).

UoPhx classes are slightly more expensive (~$500 per 3 credit hours), but they only take 3 weeks. It sure as hell beats driving in traffic after a long day at the school. But plan on putting 15-20 hours a week into the online class


I've taken four classes over two years through UoPhx. I've got one more to take this year. It's worth it.


I know a grant program which you could join to get most of that money back, but ask me about that some other time.

They had a table set-up at the career fair I went to. Seems to be legit. I'd still rather go to a class...I like having a classroom setting.

ECU offers some of the classes online I believe if you are interested in taking a couple at night during the school year.

definitely need to phone NC Department of Public Instruction Licensure Division 919-807-3310 choose option # 0 to get good, accurate info. . . online U of Phoenix course(s) are not always accepted for licensure

I got my transcript evaluated through NCDPI. This is my third year teaching in Wake County as lateral entry. I'm getting my license in June because UoPhx has been acceptable for my needs.

What do you teach?


NCDPI told me I wasn't critical needs so I wouldn't get in Wake County schools lateral entry for language arts or English. I'm highly qualified but not needed so I'm going to go back and get my license.

I'll call them again tomorrow. They were not terribly helpful the first go around so we will see.

Middle and Secondary Math. I took all my math classes while at State. I've only been using UoPhx for my Education,Psychology, Development classes.
