I reformatted my HD, reinstalled the latest version of iTunes, and now it's not letting me see the music on my iPod. I'm guessing they want me to "sync" it first.

How do I get around this?

you have to reauthorize itunes with your apple id.
but if you had previously installed itunes 7, you should be allowed to ransfer your music from the ipod to itunes

well you need an apple ID to play any music that you bought on iTunes. otherwise, you probably won't need to reauthorize.
but it's been well known that before iTunes 7, or without a 3rd party application for <itunes 7, you can't just transfer music between computers via an iPod.

but, uhh.... yeah, you're right. you'd probably have been better off just waiting for Microsoft to come out with a player

It's not supposed to. If you were allowed to look at your music on your iPod, then you could go over to any friend's house and let him steal all the music he wants. Mr RIAA would not be happy with that setup. Thus, your iPod can see all the songs on your computer, but you cannot see anything on your iPod through your computer.

Get a 3rd party solution that allows you to view all those hidden files (which you say you've already done). Transfer them to your computer, import them into iTunes, and reconnect your iPod.

And clearly a major aspect of the products's functionality should be blocked in order to appease the RIAA. Heaven forbid I be allowed to transfer any files without corporate sanction

But this isn't my main beef with them. Just a reminder of what happens when I make uninformed consumer decisions.

So am I just too MS-inclined to understand the awesomeness that is Mac software, or do I have to sync my ipod every time I change what music I have on it?. Why can't I just view my ipod's contents from within iTunes like with the previous versions?

Is it really neccessary for me to make the changes in my library, then wait 20 minutes while it syncs?

You can set the iPod to be manually managed, which should let you view an manipulate the iPod directly, without syncing the settings with your computer.

And it shouldn't take 20 minutes to sync (if that wasn't an exaggeration).

^^wtf are you talking about...unless you change every song on your ipod it shouldnt take that long to sync...and you can view the songs on your ipod and set them to change manually, as in you see the music on your ipod in itunes and add delete anything you want.

Again, the genius that is the Apple interface eludes me. All I want is to be able to manupulate my files in the iPod

I checked the "manually manage music" file. I still can't actually see the music. What tab should I be looking for? I would assume I need to hit the iPod tab on the left, then the "music" tab on the top. All this gives me is the "sync music" screen

There's a little arrow by the iPod that shows up in iTunes when it is connected. Just click that little arrow.

I'd almost feel dumb that it was such a simple solution.

If it weren't for the fact that in Appleworld, neither clicking nor double clicking on a folder maximizes its contents. There's actually a specific button you must push to accomplish this oh-so rare feat, and this button is far too cool to give the user any sort of hint that it's actually a button, let alone what its purpose is.

Haha, in OS X, that little triangle thing is very commonly used, especially in the Finder (the file browser), but also in save dialog boxes, and a few other places.

It is kind of retarded though that double-clicking the iPod doesn't open its contents, instead opens the same mostly useless configuration view.

You should submit some iTunes feedback.
