People that care far more than me will correct me. I'll just get the ball rolling by saying something that is sure to bring the nerds out of the closet so they can correct me in droves.

There are several dual core processors. A "Core Duo" is a dual core processor. Asking the difference between a dual core and a Core Duo is a lot like asking the difference between a Ford and a Taurus. We would really have to know what kind of dual core processor you have in order to effectively compare it to the Core Duo.

Yeah, I always try to acknowledge and embrace my ignorance in the Tech Talk forum. One slip up can derail a thread and lead to pages and pages of flames and trolling

^more like it's a new processor line, replacing the P4D which was also a dual core chip.

I just built a core 2 duo system last night, waiting on the video card to come in, though. The new HSF setup and way to install the cpu is pretty nice. Seemed a little better than the P4 installations I've done before.

Your analogy was slightly flawed though.

A better analogy would have been saying that it's like asking what's the difference between a car and a Taurus.

^Yeah, because saying Ford v. Taurus implies a similar manufacturer. I though "sedan v. Taurus" was a better analogy afterward but it was too late to edit.
