i like action, adventure, RPGs, and strategy.

i dislike sports, most racing games, and i suck too badly at fighting games to play them

If you want hardcore shooting action go for Contra III on the SNES or Gunstar Heroes on Genesis. Awesome, awesome games. Tetris Attack is addictive as hell.

Get a GBA emulator and play Zelda: Minish Cap. Great game, I need to play through it again some time.

Otherwise, I back most everyone else's suggestions.

haha nhl 94 was one of the first games i remember getting for the genesis. there was some deal at toys r us where you buy 2 ea sports games and get either 1 or 2 free, cant really remember. but thats how i got interested in ea sports games, and sadly am still hooked today

gauntlet is a good nes game

kirbys is another

lode runner is a really addictive nes game, with like 30 levels

art of fighting is a good one for snes, kinda limited but pretty addictive on hard

if you can find it, "bassins black bass w/ hank parker" is pretty good, i found all the hidden lures on it(snes)

battletoads was fun, the ninja turtles were pretty fun

zombies ate my neighbors was a cult fav for snes, i thought it was fun
