So, some of you may remember this thread...
http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=418686
Well, he came to Raleigh to see me and today at 12:15 he started throwing up. That lasted on and off for an hour. He was shivering and cold so I put him to bed and gave him some ginger ale. He's throwing up pure water and ginger ale again. Has a fever but doesn't want to go to the urgent care.
Help. I'm scared his sugar is going to go too low and he doesn't have a glucoshot with him. 10/7/2006 2:22:58 PM |

give him some OJ/honey ASAP and take him to the fucking hospital.
If he is that low, he cannot comprehend what is happening to him. Often when people get low they get delusional and do not think anything is wrong. TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL before he goes into a low-sugar induced coma. 10/7/2006 2:30:52 PM |

if he really is comprehending and has low blood sugar, there's no way he'd turn down oj

1.) he's an idiot for not regularly checking his blood sugar. He'll regret this when he has to get his feet cut off at some point
2.) It doesn't matter what he thinks, give him OJ or honey or something immediately. Don't listen to him, just do it. If he wont' do it, take him to the hospital. If he won't get in the car, call 911 and he'll just have to pay the extra $500 for the ride to the ER--it's better than going into a coma!!!!!
He's seriously being a moron...just tell him to drink the OJ and shut up. It sounds harsh, but he is seriously playing with his life. 10/7/2006 2:38:35 PM |

He says he didn't take any shots today and hasn't had any food in his system. He's more worried about staying hydrated but I thought water caused your sugar to go lower.
I fixed him some OJ and got a few packets of honey but he hasn't touched them yet.
I can't FORCE FEED him guys.
And if your sugar goes too lower, you seizure, not go into a coma, right? If it goes too high, then it's the coma?? 10/7/2006 2:39:24 PM |

Well, if he is throwing up and has a fever, and he hasn't taken any shots today, and he hasn't had any food, chances are his blood sugar is nowhere near what it should be, high or low. Tell him OJ will keep him hydrated.
If your blood sugar gets too low, you can fall into a coma. Seizuring is more likely, I suppose, but it's something that you don't want to risk either way. 10/7/2006 2:41:16 PM |

you are MUCH more likely to go into a coma from low sugar than from high
in any case, you need to find a monitor for him to check

I know.
I wish he paid closer attention to his disease but I can't make him do it. He just went to the doctor last week and said his number was a "7" which averages to be a steady 150 glucose level each day.
We will see what happens. 10/7/2006 2:43:52 PM |
kristamcneil All American 747 Posts user info edit post |
^^yep.
Coma is likely from low blood sugar..................some low blood sugar symptoms are:
shakiness dizziness sweating hunger headache irritability pale skin color sudden moodiness or behavior changes, such as crying for no apparent reason clumsy or jerky movements difficulty paying attention, or confusion tingling sensations around the mouth
***************But it isn't limited to these symptoms.

ask him straight up if he is low, and if he says no then i guess you should believe him

You really need to know if his sugar is low or high before you give him more sugar. If it is high, you're going to send him into diabetic shock or coma. I've been through this with my Dad. He almost died a few years ago, the Dr. said that his sugar was over 600 because it would not even read on a glucometer. They told my Mom that he would have died that night if she had not taken him to the hospital and that if she had forced more sugar into him that he would have gone into a diabetic coma-since he was so close to one already. You need to take him to the ER and have his levels checked before you give him ANYTHING.

It sounds a lot more like a stomach virus or the flu than a problem with his blood sugar. I would get him to urgent care because if he's vomiting and unable to keep anything down, his blood sugar could end up out of whack. 10/7/2006 3:59:18 PM |

Uhhhh, if this guy is a Type 1 diabetic who takes shots, he has to take his blood sugar or else he won't know how much insulin to inject. If he's just flying by the seat of his pants with the amounts of insulin he injects his level sure as hell wouldn't be at a 7.

Not necessarily. It really depends on the person and the regimen.
Sure, it's ideal to check your glucose four times a day, but not everyone does.10/7/2006 5:35:01 PM |

^^That is how he has been explaining it to me. Last night he drew up a shot and when I asked him how much a "dose" was, he said he just knows. He's had the disease for many years and although that doesn't make him an expert, he seems to be doing fine with his a1c's staying at 6-7.
I came to TWW because there are diabetics (and their bf/gf's) about his age that peruse the message board and would be able to give more situation specific advice.
He is fine now. Slept most of the day but still feeling bad.
What's to be learned from this thread: There's a stomach flu going around. Wash hands! Use Lysol! Say no to .

I was visiting a friend's house one time when her boyfriend had given himself too much insulin. His blood sugar bottomed out at like 20. She woke me up screaming through the house because he had gone into a seizure. We called 911 and everything. They gave him a glucose iv and he was ok.
This was the same guy whose dad was diabetic, and refused to accept the fact. Well he lived by himself with his 4 dogs. He died, and they ate most of his face. Then his son found him. I betcha that was fun. 10/7/2006 8:47:25 PM |

Funny thing is, his dad is diabetic and has had many incidents of blacking out and falling...mostly due to a malfunctioning insulin pump..
But he is his own person. I can't make him monitor his levels like he "should" if this route is working for him.
I mean, what am I suppose to do? I have known this kid for 4 months. I can't change 10+ years of proven practice.
