Where are you looking? I lived in St. Louis for three years...had a lot of fun. Good bars, great music scene, and very affordable. To people outside the city it is known as the backdoor to the east because it feels similar to industrial cities from the northeast. 10/8/2006 11:57:47 PM |

I lived in Kansas. Good beef, good bar scene in Lawrence, not much seasoning in the food (beef bbq as the exception), and you are a long way away if you want to see the mountains or beach. 10/9/2006 9:43:09 AM |

Lived in Wichita, KS for about 6 years before coming here. As was stated earlier, the beef is awesome. I loved the storms. Weather goes to some extremes (easily hits 105-110 in summer and well below 0 in the winter). Learn to love the wind. One major thing that sucked was that it was a 3 hour drive to the next large city (OK City or KC)

I live in Kansas right now and have been here for 2 years. I live about an hour west of Wichita in a town called Hutchinson. The people are nice, the weather is unpredictable, and there is not much to do compared to NC (beaches and mountains in NC, lakes are about as good as it gets here). I'm looking forward to getting back to NC one day, but Kansas is not bad. Traffic is never a problem and life is relatively unstressful overall. Its also a good place to raise a family.
The worst part about living here for me and my wife is that you have to fly back to the East Coast to see family which can get expensive. There is no "weekend trip home" here. You have to plan that shit and buy the flights which are costly out of a small airport like Wichita. 10/9/2006 2:57:48 PM |

^ I'll agree with that
weekend trips are a thing of the past and flying home to the east coast gets expensive quick
but if you're looking at Chicago you have nothing to worry about- Chicago is one of my all time favorite places 10/9/2006 6:18:20 PM |

I live in St. Louis now (originally from charlotte)...have been here for 3 years. Can't complain...its a great sports town with tons of bars...the weather is worse than NC and you cant drive 3 hours and be at a beach or the mountains....but other than that its a fun place to live..and Chicago is a drive away which is good also... 10/10/2006 3:11:35 PM |

Since the US expanded to the West Coast. Oklahoma, kansas, nebraska, missouri, illinois, and iowa are all part of the midwest. some even include SD and ND. I've heard people refer to Kentucky, ohio, and Michigan as the midwest, but most people I know don't consider those when referring to the midwest10/10/2006 4:38:30 PM |

This sums up St. Louis well. Great town, but bizarre extremes in weather. Lots to do, but I still love the ocean. (Just don't let anyone from STL know that you like Chicago)10/10/2006 4:44:56 PM |

as is Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, etc.
All I'm saying is that if you ask people living in those states if that is the midwest, they would say yes. They would also most likely (going off of my experience of living in KS, nothing official) say that Ohio is not part of the mid-west. 10/11/2006 9:03:38 AM |
cyrion All American 27139 Posts user info edit post |
ill give you my definition since it is the thread. i agree there is the "actuall" midwest which is Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and generally the states above them (MI,WI though generally less so that the aforementioned). then you have the supposed midwest, which i still call the midwest, which includes places like missouri, iowa, and the like.
when i went on a plant trip the ppl from wisconsin told me those werent the midwest, but i dont think they are far enough over to constitute the plains like kansas. plus do you actually know anyone who uses the great plains as a regional description anymore? seems like your choices (some overlap) are:
West South East Coast New England/NorthEast Midwest maybe SouthEast
which is why people around here call Colorado west and Kansas midwest

It isnt the midwest, but dont move the Texas, it is hotter than hell for 3 straight months(100 degrees), looks like a desert, and is completely flat. Only positive is it that housing prices are good and Dallas/Fort Worth area has alot of different industries.
I have been here for like 6 and a half months, for my job(staying in a hotel), thought about moving here but I dont think i could stand three months of hell. Also, a "cold front" here is when the high is 70. Although, since I was here the last part of "winter" last year, they did get a trace of snow, and everything shut down even though it just stuck to the shrubs.

currently in bloomington, indiana.
summers, as far as temperature/humidity, feel just like nc. winters are pretty dismal and gray, but it's kind of nice to get more than one big snow per year. storms can be pretty vicious: lightning every 3-4 seconds, each bolt sounding like a gunshot. biggest upside for me is the laid back atmosphere and beautiful natural spaces; both are pretty hard to come by in the triangle these days.
oh yeah, and being like an hour away from colts/pacers games is pretty nice too. 10/14/2006 10:57:38 PM |

BTW, the midwest is technically defined as in this map:
Basically the States that made up the old Northwest Territory. I prefer the midwest to the southeast but have no plans of moving back to either anytime soon.
