if anyone wants to post the whole insider article for all of us to read? I think the blurb about Evans is all in the preview though. 10/9/2006 4:08:00 PM |

Quote : | "The opportunity is there every Saturday. Some players seize it. Others let it slide away. Here's a look at the players who shined or slipped in Week 6:
Stock Up Erik Ainge, QB, Tennessee Ainge grew up in front of the nation's eyes on Saturday night, shaking off a rocky start to throw for 269 yards and two touchdowns in the Vols' comeback effort. It would have been easy for the junior signal caller to go in the tank after his team got down 17 points between the hedges. Instead, Ainge showed tremendous poise and leadership. This was unquestionably the signature performance of Ainge's career to date, but it seems his best football is still ahead of him.
Kevin C. Cox/WireImage.com Daniel Evans has carried NC State to consecutive wins against ranked opponents.Daniel Evans, QB, NC State The Wolfpack lost two of their first three games this season, including an embarrassing defeat to Akron in front of a packed house at Carter-Finley Stadium. After scoring an average of 19 points against subpar competition in the first three contests, head coach Chuck Amato benched starting quarterback Marcus Stone in favor of Evans. Since then, Evans has guided NC State to consecutive exhilarating victories over conference foes Boston College and Florida State. The local product has shown good touch and timing on the deep ball, and his poise is impressive for such an inexperienced player. With Evans at the helm, Amato's club is a legitimate contender in the ACC.
Justin Forsett, RB, Cal Forsett stepped in for the injured Marshawn Lynch on Saturday night and proved once again why he is considered the best backup running back in the country. The diminutive junior turned in one of his best career performances with 163 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries in a decisive victory over Pac-10 foe Oregon. Forsett is a perfect fit for Cal's scheme, as he takes advantage of spread-out defensive fronts with his good vision, shifty moves and explosive burst. QB Nate Longshore is improving each week and with weapons like Lynch and Forsett, and wide receivers DeSean Jackson, Lavelle Hawkins and Robert Jordan, Cal has to be considered one of the most dangerous teams in college football right now. Mark Nov. 18 on your calendar, as Cal is a formidable threat to knock USC off its Pac-10 throne.
John Reed/US Presswire Darren McFadden led Arkansas to the weekend's biggest upset.Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas McFadden carried the Razorbacks to their biggest win in more than two years. The gifted sophomore rushed for 145 yards and a 63-yard touchdown against an Auburn defense that had not allowed a rushing touchdown all season. His ability to handle such a big load allowed the Razorbacks to wear down a fast but undersized Tigers defense, while also limiting the opportunities for mistakes from true freshman QB Mitch Mustain. If McFadden stays healthy and sustains his recent success, the Razorbacks could shock the college football world by winning the SEC West title this season.
Aaron Ross, CB, Texas Newspaper covers in Austin are certain to feature QB Colt McCoy's mug, but Ross was the unsung hero in Texas' second consecutive victory in the Red River Rivalry. The senior cornerback notched two second-half interceptions to seal the game versus the Sooners, and he also provided outstanding coverage against receivers Malcolm Kelly and Juaquin Iglesias. Ross now leads the Longhorns with four interceptions and eight passes defended. He also has forced two fumbles and continues to provide good field position as the team's punt return specialist.
Stock Down Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon
Robert B. Stanton/WireImage.com Dennis Dixon couldn't get Oregon's offense going against Cal.Dixon grew up 15 miles from the Berkeley campus, but this was a homecoming he would like to forget. The junior signal caller, who entered Saturday's Pac-10 showdown as one of the hottest players in the nation, suffered a setback against a swarming Cal defense. Dixon completed 20 of his 35 passing attempts with three interceptions in the lopsided defeat. After Oregon fell behind early, Dixon began to press, which led to several poor decisions and forced throws into coverage. The defeat was the Ducks' first of the 2006 season, so it will be interesting to monitor how Dixon responds to the adversity moving forward.
Florida State's wide receivers The highly touted wide receiver trio of Greg Carr, De'Cody Fagg and Chris Davis has pulled a disappearing act so far in 2006. Thursday night's loss at NC State was yet another example, as TE Brandon Warren and RB Lorenzo Booker were the Seminoles' leading receivers. Carr, Fagg and Davis could only muster 80 combined yards on five catches against the Wolfpack defense. So far this season, QB Drew Weatherford's three wideouts have teamed up for a measly 38 receptions and five touchdowns. As a barometer, the Florida Gators' top three receivers (Dallas Baker, Andre Caldwell and Jemalle Cornelius) have combined for 69 catches and 11 touchdowns in as many games.
Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech Harrell threw for 342 yards on Saturday but his four turnovers -- two interceptions and two fumbles -- proved fatal in Texas Tech's 17-point loss at home to Missouri. Both of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns. The biggest issue seemed to be Harrell's inability to beat the Tigers' aggressive blitz package. In fact, head coach Mike Leach benched his sophomore quarterback for a series after watching him throw interceptions on consecutive drives. Harrell has a bright future ahead of him, but he must learn to make more prudent decisions under pressure.
Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn Irons has not looked like himself recently. He is not showing the same initial burst out of his stance and does not explode out of his cuts like he has in the past, which indicates that the sprained toe and ankle injuries are still affecting him. The senior back was limited to just 75 yards on 15 carries in the loss to Arkansas. If Auburn is to get back on track with a win over No. 2 Florida this week, Irons will need to carry a heavier load and provide more big plays on the ground.
JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU Saturday's trip to The Swamp was an opportunity for Russell to prove he could lead the Tigers to a big win on the road. Instead, Russell turned in one of his worst career performances. He completed just 24 of 41 pass attempts and his four turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble) were the difference in the game.

^wasn't hyped enough preseason, for obvious reasons, to win it this year w/ guys like quinn, peterson, and smith out there but if he keeps playing like this he could find himself in New York later this year as a finalist 10/9/2006 5:13:45 PM |

^not quite sure about that; Quinn has played two years under Weis; can't get much more nfl ready than that (and he already has all the physical tools)
i would put ainge number 2 though on NFL potential though and not far behind
what do yall think of chris leak's nfl future? 10/9/2006 5:24:12 PM |

^^ yeah, I could see Ainge being a Manning Jr., reminds me a LOT of Peyton although by his Junior year Peyton was quite a bit further along than Ainge (extra two years of Cutcliffe) 10/9/2006 5:46:32 PM |
