Anyone have any knowledge in this area?

I am contemplating something like the Gtech stuff, only more accurate. I'd like to be able to acheive the Vbox accuracy for less than $500.

I know basically how the Vbox is so accurate, it combines the 3 axis accelerometer with GPS. The temperature compensated accelerometer circuit is readily available at Analog Devices website and getting GPS information from a module is cake. The hard part would be the software to digest these two, though I fathom some opensource UAV code is out there already to do this (googling soon).

Just wondering really if any folks have used the GTech RR and can report on it's accuracy?

Why are you hoping to gain with more accuracy? GPS accuracy is good enough for driving as-is, isn't it?

My family since before my time was drag racing. Then for a few years I was into it pretty heavily, but college got in the way of that, and eventually we sold our drag car. My cousin, now 9, is in the Jr. Dragster world and is getting really good really quickly. Also, my uncle (his dad) dabbles in it since he is at the track.

So I am looking to construct some type of data aquisition system for much cheaper than what you can buy. The GTech RR actually looks quite good for the price, but it's built on a basic 3-axis accelerometer which can be done for about $50 and some coding.

what about the original gtech. I believe thats a 3axis accelerometer and can be had for something like $40

original gtech is 1 axis.

if you're drag racing, you only need 1 axis.

hopefully you're going to be forward; not moving left/right, or up/down. if you are, the missing 2 axis in your gtech is not the problem that would be in the forefront of your mind.

Look, a 1 axis gtech is shitty for accuracy. Even their RR version with the 3 axis setup isn't that accurate.

Because bracket racing is measured at those levels. It's quite routine for races to be decided down to the thousandths of second.

that's how the more sophisticated aircraft nav systems work

in fact, that's how a lot of guided munitions work, too...they download a bunch of info from the aircraft's nav system at the moment of launch/release, and then they have their own INS/GPS systems to guide them to the target...and with INS, even if the enemy manages to jam GPS, they're still screwed.
