I'm sorry if this topic has been posted before but what are the computer labs that allow free printing? I know there are a couple of new ones this year maybe?
I just found out that my TA wants us to print 30 pages of reading selection for class and ALSO bring it in and that didn't make my printer and I too happy. With being an RA I've already gone through one black ink cartridge that I bought in August.
Thanks you guys! Laura 10/9/2006 11:11:31 PM |

Search! You're not the first to make this thread. In fact, I think there used to be a thread dedicated to this topic.
Smaller department run labs are you best bet. Also, buy a laser printer. It cost 5-10 times as much to print on an inkjet printer than a laser. 10/9/2006 11:27:16 PM |

The class is for HI 341. One of the reasons why I posted this is because I heard there where computer labs that just started free printing. I'm sorry if I caused a problem to anyone for posting an unnecessary topic. Thanks to you guys who actually understand that I'm on a crazy budget and have already spent way too much money on textbooks for this class.

You can print documents (within reason) for a CHASS class in the Harrelson or Laundry CHASS labs for free.

I understand what you are guys are saying but why pay at all when it's possible to get it for free you know. Don't tell me you didn't want to go to Jimmy John's to get that 99 cent sub even though Quiznos has $5 subs and no line. You know what I'm saying? I'm just trying to make light of the subject and also avoid having to go put money in my PrintQuota account. 10/10/2006 12:58:01 AM |

Almost true. You can only print user-created documents and syllabi. You can't print PDFs or any kind of reading assignments. They've been a lot more strict about checking what you're printing this year. And for some reason, English classes don't get covered under the CHASS category for the free printing.10/10/2006 8:34:16 AM |

Let's say you have to print 500 pages over the semester. At $0.06 a page via print quota, that's $30 over the semester. I don't know which instructor you have for HI341, but I remember Bassett's required "textbooks" not costing more than $30. Add that and the required printouts, thats $60 for requried reading materials for a course, which is not unreasonable. Put some extra money into print quota and call it a day.
I think I got 1000 pages out of a $25 inkjet cartridge using draft settings 95% of the time (roughly $0.03 a page), and each cartridge would last me a semester. Not sure how much printing you are doing for RA-related stuff, but if you aren't getting that much out of your printer, you probably need a better printer or need to change settings or have them reimburse you for printing RA-related materials.
And yeah, free printing for CHASS classes is gone so far as I remember from a previous thread. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Nice while it lasted.

"Until further notice, the CHASS Restricted Printer can be used for any CHASS materials, it no longer has to be user created to be printed at the Restricted Printer."
I work in the Harrelson lab. Thats what I got on August 23rd and havent heard anything new since. Again though, if you try to print a 100 page document, thats not going to fly. 10/10/2006 10:34:15 AM |

^Sweet. That's good to know. I tried to print something once and I got shot down -- I don't remember who was in there at the time.
^^ I'll have to stop by Harrelson then. I know some of the people in the Tompkins lab are strict about docs being user-created, but I haven't been to other CHASS labs much this year. I was in Tompkins the other day and some old guy who wasn't a TA asked 3 or 4 people at least 5 questions each before he would print their stuff. 10/10/2006 3:41:34 PM |
