i quit yesterday with two of my best friends and i am hanging in there. i never smoked more than a 1/2 pack a day (unless i was tailgating all day or something) but i def. felt it was starting to grab me. i started around the beginning of my freshman year in college, 7 years ago. pretty crazy its been that long. i wouldnt mind hearing some of your stories for inspiration. 10/10/2006 6:47:38 PM |

its harder than that
i know i shouldnt smoke and i know i'd smell better and i know i would save a ton of money, but for some reason i get that urge and since i also know i can buy another pack of cigs to fill that urge i do that 10/10/2006 7:04:22 PM |

Being around people who smoke make me want to throw up--literally. I can't breathe around them; I just don't understand why they'd want to inhale the burned particles of plant into their lungs. 10/10/2006 7:21:27 PM |

i smoke and drink only when i'm around people that smoke and drink. i could never smoke independently. i don't get how its habit forming. it makes me awfully dizzy and you smell bad afterwards.
smoke weed instead. just my advice, G. 10/10/2006 8:17:31 PM |

good luck DaBird, I quit smoking last year in July after smoking about a pack a day for 7 years, it took me several failed attempts before that before I was able to finally quit for good though.
One thing that really helped me was the nicotine gum. For you since you only smoke a half pack, you could get the lowest dosage gum which might help with the cravings. The hardest part for me to get over was the association of smoking with doing stuff like Driving, drinking (not together of course), stress relief, etc
Good luck man 10/10/2006 10:12:03 PM |

The hardest part about quitting for me was the sense of panic when you get those full-body cravings and you think, "This will never go away cause I can't ever have another cig". 10/10/2006 10:26:07 PM |

Good Luck! I smoked a pack a day for 5 years. In fact, I was one of the infamous Sullivan Pyramid Smokers way back in the day. But I've been essentially smoke free for two years. I have fallen victim to the drunk cigarette a few times, but they only served to prove to me that I actually have quit because they taste like and smell like complete ass.
I managed to quit when I had to take care of my grandmother after she had open heart surgery. She needed 24 hour care and I couldn't just drop everything to go buy a pack of cigarettes. Then I felt guilty as hell smoking in the house or slipping out back to grab a cigarette when she needed my attention. I had tried a dozen times before that to quit and nothing stuck.
Just hang in there! If you want to quit, it will happen! 10/10/2006 10:33:40 PM |

First priority is to not surround yourself with people that do it until you are past your first 4 days. After that initial physical dependance, Everything else is mental it is all will power. You have to keep your house clean of temptation. None of this its ok to smoke inside crap. You need to be the fuck you all go outside guy. Then systematically introduce yourself to people smoking and you have to have will power.
now if you are like me aka if you do not have the will power you need then it is time to think outside the box.
what has worked with me is you have got to associate smoking with pain or sickness. If you smoke take a drag then put it out on the back of your hand. My brother forced himself to puke after and we both quit (he quit and lost 2 lbs)
it sounds fucking insane and that it is. Once you are desperate enough you will do anything. good luck and god bless 10/10/2006 11:26:53 PM |

i quit smoking back in january and gained like 15lbs
it's really not that hard-although it's like the third time i've quit since i started smoking at 15
people fool themselves into thinking it's like quitting heroin, but it isn't
youll have a headache for a few weeks and you will be really hungry but that's about it 10/11/2006 12:02:19 AM |

Since smoking from the age of 14 I can say that I have probably quit 50 times. I usually do good then something happens that drives me to a cig and the next thing I know I've bought a pack. 10/11/2006 12:04:00 AM |

cutting back is an underrated approach
when you smoke a pack to a pack and a half like i did each day, cold turkey is pretty miserable
if you can cut back to a couple a day, you won't have any withdrawel and you won't be able to use it as an excuse to smoke 10/11/2006 12:11:30 AM |

i've been smoking for around 7 years also i did quit once for 6 months and i quit for almost a whole year
like someone mentioned before me, i too started back when something really bad happened to me i got back up to a back a day in no time and now i am down to around 7 smokes a day unless im tailgating or something like that
one of the biggest problems for me is the habit smoking / in the car to/from work after a meal / just bored or want to get out of the office for a few minutes 10/11/2006 8:57:12 AM |

I've never been a smoker--of cigarettes. But I would like to see Nicoderm eye patches. The user could get the nicotine buzz straight through the eyes to the brain. And while wearing them, you can't see the cigs. Huh? It's gold, baby. 10/11/2006 9:11:23 AM |

12 cigarettes in 15 minutes? crazy...
in all seriousness... one of my grandfathers died from smoking (heart attack) and one of my grandmothers died in her 50's from lung cancer due to cigarettes... the driving force for you to quit should be the realization that you are slowly killing yourself...
Good luck...

Seriously though...
....you should keep an unopened pack in your pocket for at least a couple of months.
Otherwise you haven't really quit.

I'm one of one guides on the river that didn't smoke. I can't stand it, even if I smoke cigars at a party, I can't get the taste out of my mouth the next morning. Plus, it sucks to constantly smell it... and if you taken it to the next level, I've gotten high from simply BEING at or near or downwind of the PBR (Pizza By The River). 10/11/2006 10:45:39 PM |

I am on 10 months without one and have no desire to smoke again. I used the patch for 2 weeks. Worst 2 weeks ever. I felt dizzy, naseau & had bad dreams. Once I got through the first two weeks it was a piece of cake. I was a bartender at the time and around smoke so the temptation was definetly there. It is a hard thing to do but once you do it you will never be happier. By the way this was like my 5th attempt. first time trying the patch. just do it. the main thing is you have to really want to quit. it is all about self control. think about all of the health benefits and that if you pick up one you will have to start all over again on the number of days. be strong! 10/13/2006 10:40:30 PM |
