^^which event? I'm still trying to find an evo, but I might just end up "borrowing" the s2000 for a track event or two..

Porsche Club of American (Florida Crown Region) is hosting a track day at Roebling Road Raceway September 12-13th. $195 for two full days on the track, plus beer and food.

Question: I know its not recommended to just swap pads on the same rotors, but is it really that detrimental to braking performance? I want to upgrade my brake pads for the track event but do not want to deal with the hassle of resurfacing my rotors.

Advice/suggestions?

It's generally considered acceptable to swap between pads from the same manufacturer. I would try to avoid swapping completely different pads if you can help it.

I never resurface rotors, personally. From my experience, the more abrasive track pads will take off street pad deposits no problem, but not vice versa. Mixing incompatible pads can cause lots of shudder, and weaker braking performance. That said, you're probably worrying about all this more than you have to.

Well I'm talking about in the context of switching from OEM pads to CarboTech pads. I looked at EBC pads but was told they were crap. Everyone on S2Ki.com speaks highly of CarboTech. But on CarboTech's website they say to resurface the rotors before using their pads.

Are they just covering their asses?

Carbotech says they want to get a clean layer of their pad into the rotors. I just got some XP10/XP8 pads in and picked up new rotors instead of trying to clean the Hawk HP+ shit off them and have more down time while finding a shop to turn the rotors on the weekend. Unless rotors are really expensive I'd get new ones for Carbotech's XP line and avoid potential hassles.

Rotors are expensive enough! I don't feel like dropping $400 on a set of rotors when I can just take off the rotors and go to a machine shop and pay some guy $5 to resurface them.

Plus I can't afford rotors when I'm paying for a new windshield every fucking 3 months

To hell with it all. I'm getting pads for the track front/rear and they're going on the existing rotors (untreated). And after the weekend's over the other pads are going back on.

It should be fine in my experience. cold track pads are hard and will scrap the streets off no problem. just make a solid effort to properly bed the track pads in your first few laps on the first session.

your street pads will work themselves out on the post-track padded rotors in time. generally they feel really grabby at first, but it'll be ok and who cares, its the street. you'll still stop just fine, it might just feel weird. I drove both the M3 and my E30 to/from the track on autozone street pads and swapped to track pads (mostly HT10s) at the track. ever any issues.

I wouldn't waste your time with XP8s, they're not serious track pads and will overheat, yet cost a lot. I'd run Hawk HT10s all around and set it and forget it. The new HTCs are supposed to be better, but they cost more. i haven't tried them.

(words)

Okay, so the PCA Roebling Road track event. Since this was my 1st DE with PCA and my S2000 (and only 2nd DE ever) I was put in the Green (novice) group. In that group you are only allowed to pass on the main straightaway. If you were holding up a faster driver you were pretty much required to let him pass.

Nobody passed me. I passed (at one time or another) just about every car in my group except for the GTR, Gallardo, Z06, Mustang GT, C63 AMG, E46 M3 and Tesla Roadster. In different sessions I had the AMG behind me start to finish, Gallardo behind me start to finish, and GTR behind me start to finish. They'd catch me at the end of the straight but I would pull away through the twistier, slower section of the track (2/3rds of the track). The Gallardo I put out of sight, and GTR and (570hp) C63 would stay relatively close. I was faster than Boxsters, Caymans, Miatas, stripped out 944, 911s, a 930 Turbo (guy claimed 700hp), a 350Z, the other S2000s, and a 997 Turbo.

My instructor told me at the end of the second day that I was driving at the limit of my tires and really couldn't go any faster. He also said that while most drivers run in the Green group for 3-4 events he was going to recommend me to move up to Blue, the next group

Coming out of the fastest turn I was going just under 100 and shifting from 4th to 5th. At the end of the main straight I was topping out at the fuel cutoff in 5th gear (127mph). With the braking zone coming soon there was no point in going up to 6th. I loved learning to and driving my car at the limit. This was my first track event in a RWD car and to drive on the end of adhesion while being able to widen or shorten my turn with throttle application was saaaweeeeeet

Casualties: 3 S2000s (2 red, lol) spun off the track. The Mustang GT spun off. The 930 Turbo spun off. A 330i sedan spun off, hit an embankment, and rolled onto its side (no injuries but car = fucked). And finally a 350Z's engine cashed its check on the front straight. Engine totally blow, huge cloud of smoke, oil all over track, 30 minute delay. My friend was riding with that driver when it happened, and he said it actually blew when under partial throttle (slower car ahead). Sucks to be that guy

My tires didn't suffer to much and my brakes were fantastic. I can't wait to go to another event. And the 3 first timers I brought with me want to do it again (which I'd hoped for all along).

hmmm, my green group had passing on the straight, 7-8, then after the first two sessions on the first day 2-3. Obviously needing a pointby. This was with The DarkSide.

^It varies by organization. At my first DE event 4 years ago with Seat-Time I was allowed out without an instructor after 2 20 minute sessions. With PCA I'd imagine on average you'd have to do 4-8 events before you can go Solo. I don't remember their passing rules though.

It would have been nice to have more passing zones. I was up a lot of cars' butts between 2-3. I guess a lot of drivers didn't have the balls to go through turn 3 at 90mph

The C63 AMG was great to be behind, it was so loud at WOT my instructor and I couldn't help but laugh and enjoy it. He was blackflagged for violating the noise requirement of 104dB. He put out 106dB, lol.

Shit... I better see how much noise the LT1 makes. I know it's obnoxiously loud... (my guilty pleasure says to make it louder though ) . I'd hate to drive all the way to GA only to get blackflagged.

yeah, going through 3 flat out near the top of 4th (current gearing puts me around 100mph at the top of 4th) was getting my instructor nervous, especially when I had to brake for an e36 who spun off at 4.

"don't brake don't brake don't brake."

"I got it" as the back end starts a touch of sliding out.

I want to become bff with my instructor (no homo). He is tracking a 2 month old 911 GT3 RS on Pirelli slicks (the one pictured somewhere in another Garage thread I posted in) and tows it in an enclosed trailer with a Cayenne Turbo S.

He lives somewhere around Statesville

TKE, do you have a roll bar in your S2000? I'm gainfully employed again and traveling less with the new job, which is giving me the track urge, but I haven't gotten around to getting a bar in my S yet.

In other news, I'm working on the logistics of having a "race cawR!" shipped from California... That's probably the most glorious I could make this pile of heap sound. However, it should let me get a comp license and possibly go wheel to wheel this year. Now WHO'S WITH ME!!!111

I'm saying screw it all to hell.

The Porsche isn't really in any condition to go fast around any course, BUT, considering how much of an ass I drive on the roads (weather and traffic permitting), I might as well do it on a closed auto-x course.

So here we go. Lets see if I can at least beat someone out there...

I'm going to see what I can do to "prep" my car (oil change, flush brake fluid, etc...) and sign up for:

TSCC
Oct 31 (Sat) Points Autocross #8 Old Sanford Airport Sanford, NC

Happy Ahmet?

Lol, I'm sure the MX3 is faster at this point too. I'm not going too much as a competitor (this is hard because I'm a very competitive person). I just want to pop my auto-x cherry and have fun.

I wonder how many other cars I could beat... I'll be in the novice class for sure

FUCK. For the time being. I am out. From what I can tell, my front wheel bearings are worn. I felt a vibration/grinding in the front passenger... I'll check it out later, but since I'm working at the fair everyday after work and on the weekends, I won't have time to repair it before Halloween. The good news is it's only ~$50 to fix and I get to put a hub in the oven at 350* for about an hour. *le sigh* Well, they did last over 170k miles...

Wife-"Whatcha making?"
Me- "Oh, nothing... Just cooking up some car parts..."
Wife-
Me- "Dr. says I'm low on iron..."
Wife-
Me- "Wait, why aren't you in the kitchen making me a sandwhich? GET TO WORK."
Wife-

lolz jk I keed

LOL. I know how to go about checking them, I just haven't done it yet (1 part lazy mixed with 2 parts busy). I noticed the problem beginning of the week. A friend was talking to me how its about $475 to get one wheel bearing replaced for his car... I laughed at him, and now I think I screwed myself

This is bad news, I don't think Quinn and I are gonna go without you.

I had to replace a wheel bearing back around 180,000 miles, passenger front I believe. It was a huge bitch, me and theDuke866 gave up on it and I had a shop do it for like $75 (he used the part I already bought). Oddly enough the other 3 are still doing fine...
