I dont see any other threads about this (in sports talk since its sports related)

they just said that they found Lidle's passport on the road at the crash site, the plane hit a 50 story building in NYC, and Cory Lidle is believed to be the only person on board

it's a-rod's fault... if he actually swung the bat in the postseason, then they'd be playing in the ALCS right now and Lidle wouldn't be flying around dying.

I fly a bit in small planes to start off.

Lidle was flying his plane in Manhattan. When you're out in general airspace you have to be at the least 1000 ft above any population center. I am sure Manhattan is a lot higher than 1000 ft, not to mention area airports are very draconian on where you can fly at (restricted airspace for a commercial airport in simplified view is like an upside-down birthday cake).

I don't see how Lidle was flying this low normally unless he had some kind of problem mid-flight (like the engine quit). If the engine quits, the airplane pretty much becomes a hang glider, and that's not a good thing to have when you're right above a city. If that was the case (losing the engine), his best case would've been to just do a controlled crash in the Atlantic or the Hudson.

its been raining in NY, so there were probably some low ceilings, that could account for the low flight

^he has (enter salary) reasons not to commit suicide

i really hope this wasnt anywhere near the hotel i booked last night on expedia.

I didnt read all the user agreements about what happens if a plane crashes into your hotel the day before you check in.

Am i still liable for the charges? I'm not made of money i cant afford to shell out $450 for a small room that has a plane in it.

^ I think there's a $25 "back out fee" if you do it early enough

Otherwise I'd bet you could fight them for a refund, but it won't be easy. They'll say it's not their fault it happened...Expedia isn't easy to deal with, at least in my experience.

Ha ha I actually thought the same thing when I read the headlines on the news. I booked a room in NYC a couple of days ago using hotel points (thank God I didn't have to shell out $200+/night).

^^ what rate did you get?

I didnt get a very nice hotel but im only like 4 blocks from Times Square and since the accompanying lady wanted to do all the touristy things i figured might as well pay for the location.

okay i called to confirm arrival time (and because i dont trust expedia after one crazy experience) and he didnt say anything about a jet so i think im in the clear.

They are seriously thinking about cancelling the Cards/Mets game because it is in NY, that and along with the rain.

Well I don't know what the rate would have been, but I'm guessing around $250/night. I used my Priority Club points to get a room at the Crown Plaza Hotel right in Times Square. It's not a 4 star hotel or anything obviously but it looks pretty good on the website and is a great location. I booked my for late Dec so that probably has a lot to do with the price.

what happens to cory lidle's remaining contract? are the yankees entitled to pay it out (to lidle's family or something), or do they get to keep the money? i bet steinbrenner is pretty happy if the latter is the case.
