Steve Smith

Carolina looks like the Super Bowl contenders they were predicted to be with Smith wreaking havoc downfield. Panthers are 4-0 with him, 0-2 without him. He just torched the vaunted Ravens defense for almost 200 yards today. And his mere presence has opened up the running game for the Panthers. Carolina rushed for 172 yards combined in their first 2 games w/o Smith. Carolina rushed for 167 yards alone in their 4th game of the season. Best receiver in the NFL and MOST VALUABLE PLAYER so far.

I'll say this...Johnson and Smith compliment each other very well. Johnson doesn't quite have the impact that Smith does...but you take Johnson away and just leave Smith, and I think Carolina's offense sputters pretty bad too. Johnson has been making some BIG, tough catches. Great possession WR.

Since when does waiting a couple of years apply to an MVP?

Why does it matter what he does next year? Perhaps we should revoke Sean Alexander's MVP since he sucks this year.

just because steve smith is playing for our home state, doesn't mean he isn't worthy of a fucking MVP... we were 0-2 without him and we're 4-0 with him.. What other player makes this big of a difference?

he is a fucking animal and opens our entire offense up.... not even counting his BIG PLAY TENDENCY

They've surprised me quite a bit the way they bounced back from being 0-2. Not many teams can put up 400+ yards of offense and score 23 points at Baltimore.

would have said bulger if they had won today. hes had a very solid season so far.

it would be easy to argue smith. they are 0-2 without him, and been very good on offense with him. seems pretty valuable to me.

rex is having a great season, but i don't think the bears would be in trouble without him, so i'll give the nod to smith for now even though he missed 2 games.

We don't actually know that yet. The only good teams the Ravens have played all year before today were the Chargers, who purposefully handcuffed their offense, and Denver who didn't even put up 300 yards on Oakland.

New Orleans will be a pretty telling game for them.

Brees, as a side note, deserves some consideration as well.

As long as Delhomme is throwing the ball don't count on it.

It was nice listening to the announcers slobbing his knob over 350+ yards passing.

He threw 2 TD's/2 picks.

I could put up those stats throwing into triple coverage to Smitty all day long.

hahah Smith for MVP? You need to take your eyes off your own team for a minute. There are even other recievers who right now would win MVP before Smith... Berrian, Andre Johnson, Holt, Horn, Coles, Harrison

You gotta throw it out there for Grossman and McNabb right now

HA I have Smith and Andre Johnson on fantasy

and I am a huge panters fan, but Smith for MVP now?

Fuck no, he has been great and the team has looked a lot better, but he does not have the numbers

also a lot of other players have a legit shot at it

My vote goes to mcnabb as of now

smith hasnt done much this season. he has only had 2 great games so far. I know part of its due to his injury but he isnt the front runner for mvp so far. if smith cant win the mvp with the season he had last year I dont know if he ever will.

peppers is having a better year than smith so far. If he keeps this pace up he will win the defenesive poy.

he's like 5th in the NFL in yards and 2 games down on everyone else.....key is right there too.

the MVP award goes back to the age old question....Is it the best player in the NFL, or the player most valuable to his team?

I tend to go with most valuable to his particular team, so I would say @ this point Peyton, McNabb, and Grossman are neck and neck....Smitty is coming up fast, in spite of playing less. It is very unusual for a WR to get MVP, however, so I wouldn't bet on him winning it

That said, Pepps is the clear front runner for D player of the year, with only Harris even coming close to him.

Let's look at the definition..Most Valuable Player. Steve Smith hands down. I was one of those guys saying the Panthers can be good without Smitting and watched there anemic offence sputter for 2 games. (Granted they beat Minnesota if only Gamble would have held the punt return) I don't think Rex is necessarily winning the games for the Bears, although he has been on fire, but Smith has won games for the Panthers.

^^take peyton away from the Colts, or McNabb away from the eagles........

I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but just saying a WR has to put up insane #'s to win MVP...look @ smitty last year, as valuable as he is now, nobody can say that he wasn't more valuable last year. Plus he had the receiving triple crown and still didn't win it.

its actually way too early to call in the year

you have to see how they do as far as win totals and all to really tell

but at this point, being undefeated and last year compared to this year, how do u not give it to Rex

you dont have to give it to rex because their defense is incredible. i'm not saying the guy hasn't been great, but if they can score 10 points they have a good chance to win. The defense has only given up 36 points in 5 games. thats the arguement against him, although his stats argue for him as well as the wins.

its 5 games in though, to hard to call rather give 5 front runners: Smith, McNabb, Rex, Bulger, Manning in any order IMO. Manning last in that group, knowing that he's going to get pretty hot as this season goes on just like last year.

the 2 picks were harmless.....not much worse than punts. I'm all for Jake being aggressive in those situations.
