Quote :
"Duke sophomore point guard Greg Paulus had surgery Monday to repair a break in his fifth metatarsal in his left foot and will be ruled out indefinitely.

Duke is expected to make a formal announcement later Monday. Paulus injured his foot Saturday in practice.

While Paulus is out, the Blue Devils will use a committee of players handling the ball: forward Josh McRoberts, wings DeMarcus Nelson and Jon Scheyer and guard Gerald Henderson. Scheyer and Henderson are freshmen.

The injury to Paulus is similar to what befell Carlos Boozer during his Duke career.

Paulus, an ACC All-Freshman team honoree last season, averaged 6.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game a year ago while starting 33 of 36 games. He joined Ed Cota (North Carolina, 1997), Jeff Jones (Virginia, 1979) and Kenny Anderson (Georgia Tech, 1990), as the only players to lead the ACC in assists as freshmen. Paulus also set a Duke freshman record with 15 assists in a 104-77 win over Valparaiso on Dec. 18.

McRoberts, an ACC All-Freshman team and ACC All-Tournament second team selection in 2006, posted the team's top field goal percentage -- 60.5 percent -- last season. He was also on the team in scoring at 8.7 points per game and second in blocked shots (46) and rebounding (5.3 rpg.).

Nelson, one of three upperclassman on the Duke roster, is coming off an injury-plagued sophomore campaign. He averaged 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while playing in 24 games, including seven starts. Nelson shot 45.2 percent from the field and 41.0 percent from 3-point range.

The Blue Devils open the 2006-07 season Nov. 12 at home against Columbia."

He wasn't that good last season anyway.

It'd be better if McRoberts broke his foot.

who plays point for duke now? the freshman henderson maybe? the pocius kid?

sucks though in an already 'down' year for them, but i'm sure they'll be fine, because they're just about always fine

Yes, I am perfectly capable on connecting the dots in your post, however, you seem to have failed to connect them with mine.

Paulus is average at best, and a huge liability on defense even when 110% healthy. But McRoberts should have a much easier time with opposing defenses now that JJ and SheWill are gone

Carolina aint gonna dominate the acc. Paulus will be back for acc play and duke is fine at guard anyway. K coached teams are unselfish enough to do just fine without a true point. Also, as someone noted this makes Duke's d great by not having a liability on the court. (also paulus' reason for not being able to shoot 3s last year was transistion from football. said he would be better this year but not having him assures good shooters all around the perimeter)

It is funny how UNC always gets the preseason hype(rightly or wrongly).

Many analysts are picking them preseason #1 when Florida is returning pretty much its entire championship team....

the only problem i see is they have mcroberts listed as the first ball handler. I know he has handles but dont you want your big man under the basket.

Personally I think Duke is in for a long season. 9-7 in the ACC.

They dont have enough scoring.

Their offense could be more consistent, since it won't be built around freeing JJ Redick's for 3 point shots.

They'll find some way to be fine, go 14-2 and win conference. Heck, Krzyzewski turned a team that was starting Lee Melchionni into an ACC champion.

Ya never know.

Remember when that team with McCants, Felton, May, Noel, etc. was young and didn't have chemistry.

They didn't exactly roll over the ACC.

Highly touted recruits, especially large classes, don't always translate into success, especially the first year.

dook is in big trouble. their backup PG is jon scheyer who's a shooting guard and has never played a minute of college ball, and after that its pocious. i'm sure they won't be awful, but they'll definitely struggle if teams are smart enough to apply pressure defense

I don't think it's his assists that are important, it'll be turnovers when teams press them. Lucky for Duke they don't play a road game until freaking January.

I really think they'll be alright though as long as he's not out for the majority of the ACC season.

You don't break a press with one guy anyway. Almost the whole roster knows how to handle and pass. The main worry will be not having someone to create on offense.

Because UF's NC team wouldn't even sniff the title game in a typical NCAA year.

They won in an overall down year, with an incredibly weak final 4. Seriously...George Mason as the gateway to the title game?

A lot of the usual suspects are going to have down years this year. Syracuse, Duke, Wake, UConn, Maryland (can we still consider the a national power?), etc...

^Same thing seems to be said every other year and we never drop out of the top 10. Also, please don't put Duke with maryland wake and syracuse. You are being ridiculous and you know it. Duke might even surprise some people this year.

i'd be surprised if Duke won any games all season long. they lost everybody now that Paulus is out for the entire season. plus coach K is going into depression over the World Championships

Duke is preseason #7 from ESPN.

1 Senior - Joe Pagliuca
1 Junior - Demarcus Nelson
6 Sophs - Josh McRoberts, Greg Paulus, David McClure, Martynas Pocius, Jamal Boykin, Jordan Davidson
6 Freshmen - Jon Scheyer (Redick-like shooter, but much better ball handler), Gerald Henderson (been called the most athletic ACC player since Vince Carter), Lance Thomas, Brian Zoubek, Nick Sutton, Steve Johnson

Duke has some great players, but hardly ANY experience. This team reminds me a lot of the 2001 Duke team with Brand, Avery, and Battier as the most talented experienced players even though they were Sophs. Realistically, teams like this will be the norm because the great players will be gone after one year in today's society. Duke has a lot of question marks, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Final Four with their talent. They will lose more games than a normal Duke team, but will be top 3 in the ACC.

Paulus was playing with a chipped bone in his wrist and was the top QB in the country his Senior year...he's tough and I'd be willing to bet that he won't miss a regular season game this year (due to this injury).

I'm curious to see the starting lineup...I predict McRoberts (6-10), Nelson (6-4), Henderson (6-5), Paulus (6-1), and Scheyer (6-4) with Nelson matching up against the PF like he did some last year (he's strong). Lance Thomas is 6-8, but I'm not sure if he'll start as a Freshman.

Scheyer:

Quote :
"Four-year letterwinner at Glenbrook North ... played for head coach Dave Weber ... the fourth-leading scorer in Illinois High School basketball history with 3,034 points ... only player in Illinois history to finish his career ranked in the all-time top 10 in points, steals and assists ... averaged 32 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Spartans as a senior ... two-time Gatorade state Player of the Year ... three-time all-state selection ... only unanimous Class AA all-state pick in 2006 ... first team Parade All-America selection ... named to the 2006 Jordan All-America team ... helped the West team to a 112-94 victory at the McDonald’s All-American game ... scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point distance, in 15 minutes of action ... also had four assists and three rebounds ... "

Henderson:

Quote :
"Four-year letterwinner at Episcopal Academy ... played for head coach Dan Dougherty ... led the Churchman to a 27-4 record and the state championship as a senior ... played in all 31 games, scoring 667 points (21.5 ppg.) ... shot 52.1 percent (244-for-468) from the floor, while also leading the team in rebounds (8.6), assists (3.9) and steals (1.7) ... finished his career with 2,059 points, 10 short of breaking the league record ... two-time Gatorade state Player of the Year ... Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News Co-Player of the Year in 2006 ...second team Parade All-America pick in 2006 ... three-time All Inter-Ac League selection ... led the East team with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field at the 2006 McDonald’s All-American game ... also had four rebounds and an assist in 17 minutes ... winner of the 2006 McDonald’s All-American game Slam Dunk contest ... "
