Exactly true, but it was the context that this guy used it in that made it racist. From what i've read, it's clear to me he chose the world "slavishly" because he was talking to a black Republican. Blacks sometimes flip out if you imply they are a slave in any way, and he was trying to push the black guys' buttons. Slavishly was even a poor choice of word to use, as far a meaning in his context too.
