I'm a democrat. I don't think we should of gone to Iraq. I think we should work towards getting out as soon as possible.
All that being said, WTF is up with CNN and it's news coverage of the war. I think they're editorializing. Every time I go to their website it's another front page of "Oh No, the US is fucking up again." Shut the fuck up about policy and just report the damn news.

^^ I'm sure embellishing, cherry picking, and manufacturing intelligence to go to war isn't in anyone's job description, but it was done.
Our political system has too much corruption in it now, and a critical media can help to bring attention and to fix those problems. A passive media just becomes the whipping boy for politicians to manipulate. 10/19/2006 3:22:03 PM |

So I'll say, "The media focus entirely on the bad news."
And you'll say, "All of it IS bad news!"
And I'll say, "How do you know you just think that because your only real exposure is from the media?"
And you'll say, "Why do you automatically assume that it isn't all bad news?"
And I'll say, "I just find it hard to believe that every single newsworthy thing coming out of Iraq is entirely negative."
And you'll say, "Nuh-uhn, haven't you seen the news? Why, just today..."
And then I will just crawl into a bottle until you shut up or I'm too drunk to care. 10/19/2006 4:53:11 PM |

If there is so much good news to be had in Iraq, how come this administration doesn't report it at any press conferences?
Hell, even marginally good news, or even neutral news can be spun up into something positive by this admin and their grunt Snow. 10/19/2006 5:07:33 PM |

Sigh...I basically called it.
I didn't say there is "so much good news," but I think any situation where you find uniformly bad or good news is rare.
As to why the administration doesn't try to play up good or neutral things...part of it is what seems to be contempt for what we think, part of it is incompetence, and part of it is that as soon as they say good things, people rush to rip holes in whatever they say. 10/19/2006 5:19:22 PM |

Any war that hasn't noticably progressed over the last three years is not exactly being "won". Any war that has regressed over the last two years is being lost. 10/19/2006 8:22:29 PM |

That's a reason to not talk about the good news? Doesn't sound like an administration of no cutting and running to me. Thats kinda...pussy, in my opinion.
I just want to see a plan from someone. The last "plan" I heard/saq was we leave when the Iraqi's can defend themselves. And, if I remember correctly, seeing some diagrams with X number of Iraqi battalions and how far along they were in being "brought online". Why don't we see that regularly (daily/weekly?) as a progress report? Is it perhaps, because the administration knows if they let the public know that it takes many many many years and 100s of billions (will eventually be 1 fucking trillion) of dollars to build nearly from scratch a properly trained armed force, that any support they have left from the "at least he has the balls to take it to them" crowd will dry up and will have our Vietnam all over again?10/19/2006 9:33:52 PM |

At this point I would have said that the media also includes accounts from leaders and generals that paint an overall negative view of things in Iraq, as well as the supposed NIE report.
Even if good things are happening, it wouldn't seem to represent the whole picture. If you are trying to assess how to move forward logistically, the few good things are not too relevant.
As it is now, it's pretty much only Bush and his crew who are asserting that things are going well in Iraq (actually, they're not really even playing this line anymore).
Turning a blind eye isn't going to help America, Iraqis, or the fight for terrorism. If you can find convincing evidence that Iraq is not going to end up like Afghanistan, Iran, or North Korea, that would be excellent, but all signs point to a despotic, fractured Iraq, if nothing is done.10/20/2006 1:34:10 AM |

CNN's war coverage is getting more and more like msnbc's...where anytime there is good news it is presented like "HEY THERE IS GOOD NEWS!!!"...this is obviously not often...
but any time there is bad news it is presented like "....yeah....guess what....more bad news....we suck...bush sucks....republicans suck......lets all go home"...

By the way, has anyone noticed that the violence has increased in Iraq leading up to our elections? The terrorists are clearly trying to affect the outcome of our elections in favor of the Democrats--because they know that many Democrats want to pull out of Iraq. 10/20/2006 1:17:28 PM |

There's a White House press conference on now and the goddamned press corps is too fucking stupid or uncooperative to understand the difference between strategy and tactics. For the White House press corps and the rest of the ill-informed, good working definitions are strategy = "plan" and tactics = "methods." For fuck's sake! 10/20/2006 1:30:40 PM |
