Ok instead of making this like every other thread, a pro/anti bush debate.
Some of you econ buffs out there, tell me what you think of this.
I read a while back, i believe actually heard on npr, that the DOW going up is not necessarily a good thing. The other indexes have gone up also it seems but i wonder if there is anything to the idea that since the DOW is mostly made up of companies that are said to do well in rough times that money being poured into the DOW is actually a bad sign.
Point 2 I read/heard this before the recent climb to 12k.... The others such as S&P at the time had not gone up, but they seem to be creeping up also. so has this new found slow growth of the other indexes nothing more than blind optimism and nothing more than an aftershock of the DOW's climb? Kinda like if this is going up the others have to be doing well also, "the mentality of the common person".
Because although inflation came back better ( due to oil's drop) the housing market is not robust anylonger, although it has not collapsed either. and everything else i have read indicates a cooling. 10/19/2006 9:59:31 PM |

This is all irrational exuberance and we are headed for a bearish run, especially once energy gets expensive again. Stagflation ftw! 10/19/2006 10:03:53 PM |

And who's silly idea is that? The DOW hit a local minimum in 2001, at the end of a recession. So, suggesting that the DOW goes up in rough times is blatantly false: It went way down in the last "rough time" we had. Plus, right now is clearly not a rough time: productivity is up, unemployment is down, wages are up, and inflation is stable. As far as times go, right now is close to optimal and the DOW is up.
Quote : | "the DOW going up is not necessarily a good thing" |
This statement is quite true. It is very possible for the DOW to go up irrationally. However, we generally know when that is by checking the actual performance of the listed companies, which is very good right now (profits are way up for most everyone) so I think we can rule our irrational exuberance for the time being.

It is very difficult to predict the future accurately. However, a slight cooling would not be that much of a problem as the economy has been booming in the past few years. You see, 5% annual growth is obseen for an industrialized economy, but we've had it. To suggest that this is going to cool is a no brainer, but how much? 3% annual growth is still above trend and nothing to complain about.10/19/2006 11:27:10 PM |

what they probably meant is that the DOW tends to weather storms better than some markets.

concur.
when people talk about "slight cooling", they aren't talking abour our economy shitting the bed...they're talking about it resuming a more sustainable rate of increase.10/19/2006 11:37:11 PM |

I know the basic stuff I have seems to be doing good
but I need to start digging into more investment stuff... right now some types of real estate have captured my attention and I need more than that 10/20/2006 12:18:36 AM |
