inspired by the basslines thread

this thread is NOT about drum solos, but just the basic drum part throughout the song.

i'll start

"one beat" ~ sleater-kinney

"insistor" ~ tapes 'n tapes

"off this century" ~ unwound

and no list would be complete without:

"bang the drum" ~ railroad jerk

this is just a quick and dirty list. i'm sure i can think of more better ones later.

[Edited on October 23, 2006 at 7:02 PM. Reason : not to imply this is the BEST drumming in a rock song. but it's the drumming that makes these songs.]

Janet Weiss is just a beast at drums. Pretty much every Quasi song she drums on is a canadate as well, but I'll pick "Our Happiness is Guaranteed".

Elvis Costello "(I Don't Want to) Go to Chelsea"
The Thermals "Brace and Break"
The New Pornographers "The Electric Version"
Kind of Like Spitting "Passionate"
The Long Winters "Carparts" (Ben Gibbard drums on the last two album cuts. What a champ.)

I know it says rock song, but I'm going to nominate every drum pickup in the history of Motown.

Also:

Radiohead - "Airbag"

re: airbag

i remember reading an interview with phil selway once where he someone asked him about the song

he said something along the lines of, 'yeah i meant to go back and fill in the holes but kind of forgot about it. sounds cool though.

very odd, but one of my favorite drum parts ever

I'm sorry, but you are all wrong. This is easy:

"Tom Sawyer" - Rush

The rest are honorable mentions, ie:

"46 and 2" - Tool

if you disagree, you're just wrong. neil peart is at the forefront of the most innovative, original, musical and technical rock drummers of all time.

MY OPINION IS RIGHT AND YOURS IS WRONG!!!!

Sure he's a great drummer, but I think felating him via messageboard (i.e. what you're doing) is a bit overboard.

you're out of your element ronny. now go practice singles on your iron cobra and come back when you know something about the instrument you play.

Who the fuck do you think you're talking to? What makes you think you know more than me? You do know that drumming goes beyond ramming as many notes as possible into a measure, right? Being a good drummer is more than raw chops, but it is apparent that you don't know that.

Yeah buddy, I played a measure of 32nd notes, I totally rule!

You apparently failed to make sense. I have an iron cobra, yes, but what does that have to do with me supposedly knowing less than you and you sucking Neil Peart's cock?

I really like the drum part in "Steerage" by The Shipping News.

But that cat isn't rocking a 26 piece kit, so I guess it really isn't that great.

p.s. "Entertain" by Sleater-Kinney.

peart's strong point wasn't dynamics, i'll grant you that. one thing he brought was pocket, which is something a lot of rock drummers continue to lack (those most famous for having it that come to mind would be Bonham, Copeland, 311's Sexton and RHCP's Chad Smith). it isn't so much that his style of drumming would make an audience's collective jaws drop today as much as he had a huge impact on the world of rock drumming, almost as much as Bonham. additionally, he was one of the VERY few drummers in rock history who could actually use an oversized kit in a very musical way (akin to the amazing Beauford or Bozzio, who actually I can't stand).

there are plenty of people out there now who could easily pipe peart in a lot of ways, but i'm talking for the time period here. when modern drummer did a 'best drummer of all time' 5 or so years ago, they listed buddy rich as the best drummer of all time, mainly because of his innovation and contributions to the drumming world. there are plenty of people who have mastered his techniques today, but it's about giving credit where credit is due.

if you dont realize what peart did for rock drumming, despite how many people admittedly do suck his dick without knowing what they are talking about, and you are a drummer, you need to swallow your pride and shut the fuck up, because just about any humble professional rock drummer will break it down for you pretty much the same way i just did.

You're an idiot. I wasn't saying Peart was a bad drummer. If you will read, you'll notice I said he is a damned good drummer. However, you're going a bit overboard here. Yes he's great and influential and an icon, but dude, there is more out there.

Also, this thread wasn't about the best drummer, it was about the best drums in a song.

it's actually about the best drums in a rock song if you want to get technical, but my point stands. i'm talking about for the time period, and most influential. you still haven't grasped that. the only leg you're standing on is that i asserted my opinion to be fact, which is valid. there are plenty of songs you could pit against my selection. if you really take what i said that seriously you need to check your address bar.

i play guitar and sax...no drums...but Neil Peart does some neat stuff.

I also like the intro to Van Halen's Hot For Teacher, and I like those few measures of drumming from Keith Moon right before the big Daltrey scream near the end of Won't Get Fooled Again.

this thread isn't about "best drummer." it's about great drum parts in specific songs.

for instance. i don't think the drummer for U2 is that great, but the drumming in "sunday bloody sunday" is great and very memorable and makes that song.

see how that works?

maybe this just reminds me of seeing them do this song live as their opening (everyone comes out and starts playing drums in the intro to the song - pretty neat).
