i am a total n00b when it comes to networking and remote file access and all that jazz

i have a file server kicking it in my room

i basically want to be able to remote into it so that i have access to everything just like i do when i am connected to my wrt54g in my room

it is running windows 2003 enterprise that fell off the back of a truck but it is way over my head

i am starting with zero knowledge, so recommending an easy, secure flavor of *nix if that is better is cool with me

i have done some searching, and i would imagine that this server will have to run dhcp and some vpn software

basically if you have read this far, where do i need to go to learn about this and set it up

oh and the server is a dual PIII 800 MHz with 768 MB RAM

i also have to set up a RAID when i get around to getting another hard drive

wipe win2k3 off of there and get linux.

setup a sftp or scp server and get an end user client for your remote machine. setup your router to forward the port(s) you need.

call it a day

Aficionado If this dosn't work^ which it will more likely fail, then let me know. I think you should stay with windows b/c its better and more popular. But thats just my opinion. Call this number (919) 785-2498 <comp usa, and one of us should guide you in the correct manner, and not mislead you.

Setup Remote Desktop and call it a day. Terminal Server, SFTP, Linux, and other options probably aren't for you.

By that metric, linux is far more popular than Windows. 2K3 Server is great, but he is running Enterprise which means it's 100% bootleg, and in being so he can't get ANY official support or resources for it. Which makes it pretty worthless.

alternative is to run your own ftp server (filezilla server) or vpn (tightvnc) software instead

If you try to setup an FTP server of any sort and don't configure it properly, you will most likely be hacked. Don't believe me? I setup a temporary FileZilla Server yesterday behind a NAT so I could transfer some files too large for email to my fiancee. She got what she needed, and not too much longer later (I was out for the evening), some bot (or silly person) from China tries to login with the username "Administrator". Less than 8 hours, and somebody already found the temporary server.

...setup Remote Desktop.
