Good lord you people are sad.

It's not that hard to learn enough to get a really good start.

I'd teach you, but I don't have time for shit these days.

Maybe jimb0 or Ronny or some or the other TWW drummers can help you.

Yup. Pretty much. I just started banging around on binders and stuff with a couple of pencils. You'd be surprised how much that helps.

Then, probably eight years ago or so, I just started messing around on a set. I was awful at first, but eight years later, I can play around to almost anything I like to listen to. And that's all I care about.

I goofed around in a band for a couple years, and now I just play for the hell of it whenever I get a chance. Hell of a stress reliever.

Just gotta feel the beat and go with it.

Get a radio and just go through every station on the dial. Even if you hate the music. Just play until a commercial, then go to the next station.

can you count to 4?
can you pat your stomach and rub your head at the same time?

if you answered yes to both of these questions, you're all set.

I still have a lot of trouble with 3/4 and odd time signatures.

I'd ask Neil Peart or Dr. Worm if I were you.

You do know not all music is 4/4 right?

Have fun trying to play some shit in 7/8 or something like that.

One can be a successful drummer simply by laying down the groove and having decent coordination. For a lot of gigs out there, the person hiring would rather choose someone who can lay down a groove and make people dance, as opposed to having a drummer who has all sorts of crazy chops and can play in 15/8.

However, it I think it's also important that drummers study the rudiments/learn to read music/etc....it'll make them more complete drummers/musicians.

i agree alot of it IS NOT acquired.

you have to have at least some amount of talent and beat awareness, but if u can clap ur hands in sync and tap your foot, u could be able to do a bit of drumming.

I play alot and its really just natural for me, i can feel the fill in's coming and just naturally go at it, but thats because i started playing when i was prolly 3 or 4.

I can read a little music but its better for me to just go with the flow

the guy that said just turn on a radio station and play, i totally agree, just listen to songs, play along as much as possible...beat with ur hands independently as much as possible and really try to find ur own style. its alot of work and practice but if you have the natural rhythm you should be fair.

yes, of course. but a large percentage of music, especially rock and pop, is 4/4.

there's also a big difference in someone who simply knows how to play the drums and someone who knows how to play the drums well.
