Best damn news I've heard all week.

Ok, my buddy David had a 2005 gixxer 750 and had it stolen last month right from his apartment complex near NCSU. The bike was locked and was pinned between a dumpster and a car. In the process of removing the bike between the two objects, they scratched the hell out of the car and a bit on the bike.

So my friend was aimlessly been keeping tabs on a few websites such as craigslist, ebay, a few gixxer sites for people selling parts or bikes without titles. Well, he got lucky today and found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-Suzuki-GSX-R-
750-Blue-Whtie-Low-Miles_W0QQitemZ170042610220QQih
Z007QQcategoryZ50029QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The guy was located in Durham. He noticed that the front tire was dunlop and the rear was a pirelli strata (I sold him the new set of pirelli's a week before his bike got stolen) from the 4th picture so my friend went up to look at the bike in person at the guy's house. On inspection, he also noticed a few memorable scratches on the bike when he accidentally keyed the tank, the impression of a sticker that he got from the dragon, some more scratches on the side of the bike when the thieves were removing the bike from the apartment complex.

He shook hands with the asshole and said he'll come back tomorrow with a certified check. After he left, he called the cops on the SOB and within hours, SWAT and tons of cop cars were outside of his house and did a sting operation. When the two suspects were pinned to the hood of the SWAT cars, my friend test's his key in the ignition, gas and rear trunk and it turned without a hitch. Somehow they were able to get a key made for the bike. The frame also turned out to be swapped with another one but left the bike the same.

Glad cops are finally doing something, but after my friend did all of the investigative work...

Hahah, awesome. I'm glad bike theft isn't so rampant around here...definitely getting a place with a garage when/if I move to a bigger city!

Dumbasses. I would have asked why it has a salvaged title with such "low mileage" and apparently great maintenance.

Is this the guy that had your friend's bike? He happens to have a lot of bike pics in his photo gallery. Have your friend send the link to the detective that is working the case. http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f3/Shefgotti/

How it turned into a 2004 after he bought it is sketchy though.

because they are idiots. 2005 bikes include late 04 manufactured bikes as 05 bikes are sold in 04. So he thought it was an 04 when in fact the color scheme is only apparent for 05's. It was a latino and a white guy, both in their 20's that were charged. Even if they swapped the frame and can't identify the bike itself, my friend had the keys and worked on the bike so there's atleast some portion of stolen property on the bike. We do have pictures of the bike before it was stolen and it shows all the small details of the bike to identify it. There were a lot of other small things about the bike he noticed right away.

actually, the cops staked out the nearby gas station by the house. Yeah, the guy in the pic is the same guy that was riding the bike around with no tags and was charged. They were released though, but were charged with possession of stolen property. They were released because the vin #'s didn't match on the bike. More info to come.

If his story checks out that he did buy the bike as is from some guy in Virginia or Maryland... then the story thickens. I just hope my friend gets the bike back.

So got some good news today. After playing phone tag with the detectives and dmv for 4 months, my friend finally got hold of someone. They say that we can take everything but the frame. So that means we have to disassemble the whole damn bike, buy a new frame with title, and rebuild it. What a hassle. So we are trying to see if we can get the whole bike with the frame, but with no title. DMV sux. All I got to say about that.

At least when and if they conclude the investigation, my friend could sue the guy who stole it in civil court and get money back for damages, parts, and labor. Up to 5k. So hopefully it'll get done soon.
