wonder if Pearl can keep the success going... lost a few key people but had a badass recruiting class (especially for suckass Tennessee bball). JaJuan Smith will explode this year and everyone knows about Lofton. Just need to replace Watson and that shithead Wingate. Excited to see what Crews, Chism, and Ramar Smith can do

had the first exhibition game on Tuesday against some dude named LeMoyne-Owen

Quote :
"HOT SHOOTING PROPELS VOLS TO 126-66 EXHIBITION WIN OVER LEMOYNE-OWEN
Vols hit first 18 field goals to start the game

Oct. 31, 2006

Knoxville, Tenn. - It was a blowout of the utmost proportion. As anticipated, the No. 24 Tennessee Volunteers put on a shooting clinic, hitting 69.6 percent from the field, against an undersized and overmatched LeMoyne-Owen team in recording a 126-66 victory in the first exhibition of the season at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The 126 points bettered the following two marks. It was the most points in an exhibition game (119 vs. St. Mary's (CA) - Dec. 1975) and the most points in any game (121 vs. Mexico - Jan. 24, 1966).

Head coach Bruce Pearl got to put his squad through the paces against someone other than themselves as nearly every player that saw action scored. Using a mixture of rotating lineups, the Vols moved at ease, using quick hands and pressure defense, around their cross-state brethren from Memphis.

"This is a chance for our players to see what they could do," said Pearl. "They saw how our substitution system works, which means they will not have to be staying on the floor continuously. We did not press at all in the second half."

JaJuan Smith led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 8-of-11 field goals. Seven Vols, including Smith, scored in double figures. Tony Passley connected his first seven shots before finishing 8-of-9 for 17 points. Freshman Wayne Chism also scored 17 making 7-of-9 field goals.

Duke Crews and Ramar Smith each added 12, followed by Ryan Childress with 11 and Chris Lofton 10.

Jihad Sharif recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead LeMoyne-Owen.

Tennessee blistered the nets early, connecting on its first nine shots, in racing out to a 22-2 lead at 14:43. The streak went to 18 on JaJuan Smith's lay-up at 11:20 and ended on a Dane Bradshaw missed jumper at 10:35 only to be followed by an offensive rebound and lay-up by Crews to make it 44-16. Three missed free throws were the only blemishes in the first nine minutes for Tennessee.

"We need to make our free-throws and 3-point shots better," said Pearl. "You have to admire a team that comes out and makes its first 18 shots - that was really something. We had balance in our scoring."

The hot shooting continued the rest of the first half as the Vols finished 29-of-36 for 80.6 percent in building a 76-29 lead at the break.

The Vols exhibited solid passing skills, handing out 31 assists while only making nine turnovers. They also recorded 14 steals while forcing 23 turnovers.

Tennessee faces Division II Tusculum College in its final exhibition, Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Quote :
"3. Tennessee
Reasons to be excited: What Bruce Pearl did last season at Tennessee was nothing short of amazing, and anybody who didn't pick him as SEC Coach of the Year should have their voting privileges removed forever. In his fist season at the school, Pearl led the same unheralded roster that got Buzz Peterson fired to a top 10 national ranking while playing a fast style that's exciting to watch. Now, the best player on that team (Chris Lofton) and heart of that team (Dane Bradshaw) return along with a solid recruiting class featuring Ramar Smith, Duke Crews and Wayne Chism.

Reasons to be depressed: C.J. Watson's departure means the Vols will be using a new point guard. He'll probably be a freshman, and that's always risky. The real blow game when Major Wingate was dismissed during the offseason for reportedly failing multiple drug tests. That left Tennessee without its center, who averaged 10.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season.

How it'll all shake out: Though Tennessee will be good and exciting, it's hard to imagine the Vols won't slip some. Pearl scheduled tough, thinking he would have an experienced center. Alas, he does not, so the Vols could take some early losses, but they'll still land in the NCAA Tournament.

With Wingate they would be right there with UF and Bama in the SEC...without him they will have to play well to get a NCAA bid.

beat Fordham (woo fucking hoo), Lofton went off and Duke Crews looked really good.

2-0. Play UNC-Wilmington tonight, which will probably actually be a close game, might even sneak in a beat UT...

finally realize they suck????

what does that even mean? you act like they have been highly ranked for a decade or something. they sucked for years (at best were average for a few years under Green) and are finally starting to play good...

and obviously you care because you read the thread and decided to click on it

makes no sense at all, making the tournament when they were predicted not to, beating Florida, Kentucky, top 10 recruiting class etc...

and that was a typo, not grammar

and Lofton has 4 fouls already, and they are hitting retarded shots...no way we win this, but my Butler +5 is looking good

In a weird way I liked their chances against UNC better than against Butler, Butler is the exact type of team that fucks up Pearl's system

now they are just looking like shit. Playing good I thought Butler had them, but playing like this Peace college would have them.

hahaha, that might be the worst half of bball I have ever seen, got to get that shit straight, 3 for 28 shooting, ew

yeah, still sucks though, not so much that they lost, I actually thought Butler had a really good chance to beat them, its the shitty shitty second half that bothers me.

I mean, in the whole scheme of things it probably wont matter much, they still need to beat the bigger teams either way...

yeah, we are fucked, just saw an interview where Roy said he was going to make sure Hansbrough got the ball all day, and Tenn doesnt have a true center, much less one good enough to stop him...

my prediction

UNC - 92
UT - 78
