i do not understand what i just watched. we are the most bizarre team ever. i thought the play calling finnally improved because it seemed like we came out passing and a better philophy but just didnt execute. sometimes we look great a few plays then bam. i thought the playcalling was great for the most part but 3rd down still BOGGLES ME

3rd and 10- evans draw up the middle
3rd and 10-screen blackman 3 yards
3rd and 10- screen incomplete
3rd and 4- 2 yard pass

it seemed like the closer we were to scoring the worse teh 3rd down call was. i swear there were times during this game where i looked at stone 3rd downs and xps and wondered if the coaching staff even wanted to win...

evans-played terrible in the first half and then when rearly hit guys there wre alot of drops

extra points-down by 2 why would you kick an extra point...twice? my best guess is that the offense wasnt ready since the tds were all non offensive.

stone-is he really our best wr? better than the other 7 guys. why the fuck is he in the game. this si the thing that really pissed me off more than anything ever. stone drops a critical pass and commits a harmful penalty. stone in the game sometime is fine but it seemed like he was our go-to guy tonight behind hill while james and bowens just watched all night. the whole time i thought maybe they were planning to throw a screen to him and have him throw deep but that never happened. how could he play wr and this not happen? if he just had to be on the field i would of rather seen him at qb since evans was sucking hard but we are loaded at wr

hill-omg hill. dropped td. drop 4th and 3. bonehead late hit that ruined a drive and he goes right to chuck WHO PATS HIM ON THE BACK. you gotta say something to him or take him out. they claim to sit james because of discipline but ive never seen him commit a foul. we got other guys that can play you have to punish that behavior.

willie young got an unsportsmanlike for friggin flexing his muscles. that gave up a td. let them play guys

blackman-best player on the team. still a bonehead for diving

fgs-ok deraney misses a 43 yarder and we come back THE NEXT DRIVE AND TRY A 54 YARDER? and it gets blocked by an invisble mugsey bouges

andre cannot catch. plain and simple. if we throw to the hb it needs to be baker. why do we even run up the middle anymore? outside runs are the only thing that wroked against app.

ints-gg defense on these. game changing plays. gt ran all over our ass. they are a damn good team and calvin pwning double coverage is understandable too

fanscmon guys you gotta stop leaving ahead of time. leave when the game is over. most people left in the period between when gt got into scoring range and when they scored. the place was empty on our last 2 minutes stowned drive.

last play i would have liked to have a guy back to return the punt but o well. my biggest gripe is HOW DO YOU NOT RUN SOME KIND OF LATERAL TILL DEATH PLAY? CAN YOU SERIOUSLY SCORE OFF A 20 YARD FADE FOR 80 YARDS? GIVE IT TO BLACKMAN OR ANYBODY AND LATERAL IF YOURE GONNA GET HIT MUSIC CITY MIRACLE BABY.

we still got 3 games left and its important we stay behind the team and coaches until the season is over. i still urge you guys to wait till then before you fire any coaches or staff memebers. the players need your support in this tough time for the last 3 games. there will be plenty of time to discuss other stuff after the season.

wouldn't try for 2 until the 4th quarter

anytime before would have been irresponsible and pointless

we couldn't even score points to sustain a lead

^why wait to the 4th qtr and then absolutely HAVE to make it. how do you know you are going to score again anyway? we would have lost the game 24-23 because of this and i would have felt really cheated.

how is it pointless to tie the game? you don't knwo if you might get an opportunity to score again or not the rest of the game so you want to tie any chance you get. this is like being down by 4 and kicking a 15 yard fg on 4th and 2.

why do you go for 1?thats whats pointless. if you don't get the 2 there really is not much difference in being down by 2 as opposed to being down by 1 and things are much much better if you are tied. if gt didnt score a td and kicked a fg we would have still lost because down by 4 instead of 3 (or worst case scenario 5)

b/c its better to wait till then, instead of being up by 2 in the 4th and having missed one of those 2 pt tries and saying "FUCK, if we had kicked an XP instead of trying 2, we could be up 3, we suck"

^no we would been 2 down instead of down 1 or up 1 instead of up 2.

it comes down to the difference between a 1 and 2 pt game vs the differencce between a 2 and 3 pt game(or tie and 1 pt game) and i think the difference between a 2 and 3 pt game is much bigger than 1 and 2

in the end, do the 2 point conversions really matter? no. we lost by 8. our offense would have still never got any production, and our defense would have still given up their obligatory late game TD.

so "in the eeeend it doesn't even matter"

but if we scored or if gt didnt get the td it would have killed us. i just don't like this kind of thing. you play to win the game. we did something similar and loss the vt game on it last year.

you don't chase points unless you are in a desperation situation. the decision to go for the PAT instead of the 2-pt conversion was a good one, because it was after the first play of the second half. there was no reason for us to chase down points at that point, because if the defense could hold GT to a couple field goals instead of a couple touchdowns, we would have been one touchdown away from a tied game.

The bad decisions were the 49 and 53yd field goal attemps when we were down by 1. those are long kicks and gave GT good starting field position when we missed them. Deraney wasn't kicking field goals well that game, but he was having an incredible night punting the ball. if we could have pinned them inside the 20 with those kicks, it would have set up the battle for field position better in our favor. Considering how shitty our O-line is, we need to be able to rely on our defense. Besides, GT has a horrible passing quarterback in Ball, and he had alreadygiven us one of our touchdowns. After the second missed FG attempt, Ball, threw a horrible pass that resulted in an interception and a long runback to the 20. If we had punted and made them start at the 16 instead of the 36, we might have scored a touchdown on defense.

Do you really think Tech would have punted the ball to blackman had they seen him back to receive the last punt? I don't think so, they would have punted it out of bounds...

when they lined up for the punt, they saw noone deep to receive it, and drove it deep to pin us back

if they had put him back there to return the punt, we would have gotten the ball at midfield or better instead of the other end of the field.

we would have had the same amount of time for a desperation hail-mary or lateral play.

i liked our chances blocking a punt or botched snap with 11 guys way better... i approve the decision

same amount of time, but we would have been at a position on the field where the quarterback was actually capable of throwing it in the endzone.

I can see that... considering the punt down the middle bounced back atleast 10-20 yards.

I was just explaining that they would have punted away from blackman.

he kicked that ball low and deep, so it got an additional 20 yards through the air as well. if he had overkicked his coverage like that with Blackman in the backfield, Blackman would have easily returned it to the 30yd line or better before GT coverage could run him down. From there it would have at least been a repeat of the BC game.

as far as kicking it low and deep AND out of bounds - there are probably all of 3 punters in division-1 ball this year that are accurate enough to do that. it's really difficult to drive a ball sideways and low without having it graze off the side of your foot, and there's no worse place to slice a punt than standing in your endzone. He would have just kicked it straight and high and hope that Blackman does his usual of getting cocky and not calling fair catch when he's covered.

considering the time on the clock, Blackman probably couldn't call fair catch and would be forced to run to the sidelines to stop the clock.

going for all those 2-pt conversions might have cost the Panthers the super bowl a few years ago. They missed 2 of them IIRC, and they baited the Patriots into taking a 2-pt conversion attempt late in the game that was made.

It works both ways though...there have been a lot of time when not going for it has lost teams games too so its really just a judgment call

but i hate the fact that they didnt put anyone back to return the ball on the punt...i know this is the thing to do in college football now but it seems like it never works because it is too easy for the punter to just nail the ball straight and deep because no one is back...jw though has anyone ever seen this work?

I would agree with the call if your had the kicker pinned inside his own endzone and taking a short snap, such as if the ball was around the 3 yard line. then the field position alone is enough to force him to kick the ball high and short. doing so when the kicker has a full 15 yards of space for getting the ball of seems stupid though.

pretty good thread hcnguyen. I agreed with a lot of what you said.

3rd down playcalling is definitely an issue. It's like, we might as well tell the defense, "hey, we're about to run our most popular play: the shotgun HB draw up the middle, ready?"

evans: eh, he played pretty solid, 270 passing yds is not bad

stone: agreed, we relied on him too much

brown: agreed, no more passes for you

and willie young's penalty was garbage; if that's a penalty, then there should be a flag on every play for every team, which would be garbage. maybe he said something vulgar that we couldn't hear from the stands, like, "yeah, i raped his little sister last night!" i'd probably throw a flag for that too, or just chuckle and pretend like i didn't hear it
