i'll make this short.

i just reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled a copy of windows
i installed the drivers for the mother board, etc....
and my internet doesn't work anymore
when i open up the internet explorer browser, it says "detecting proxy settings"
and I know my internet connection is fine at my home; I'm using my laptop right now

anyone know what's wrong?

Have you disconnected and reconnected your modem? (turn it off and power it back up after a few minutes)

i went to the device manager
and it said my NVIDIA network controlleris working properly

to get rid of the "detecting proxy settings" message do the following.


Open up IE, Tools-Internet Options-Connections-Lan Settings remove the check next to Automatically detect settings.

this setting shouldnt interfere with you getting connected to the internet, it normally disappears after a few seconds.

-Should have something that comes up saying "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection". Tell us the number that shows up in the "IP address" field.

when i tried to renew my IP address after i released it i got the message after a while saying...

"an error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2 : Unable to contact your DCHP server. Request has timed out."

Is there anything under device manager that is reporting errors or unknown device? It sounds like your network card is not properly installed.

I've had LAN2 on several computers before and the network worked fine. Not sure if its common. One of my motherboards has two network ports so the LAN2 makes sense for that one but some of the others I don't know why it used LAN2.

Take this as a free bump I guess cause I don't know what I'm talking about.

what router do you have? is your computer the only one having issues connecting?

That name is common - it came from when he deleted the network card and reinstalled the drivers.

This is almost always a network card issue when dealing with a home setup. It's a fresh install of Windows so I don't think it would be a winsock issue but I suppose it's always possible.

Let it go through all of it's steps and then restart your computer. Try to get online after doing this. Let us know.

Try giving yourself a static IP and see if you are able to ping the gateway (your router).

Go into Control Panel - Network Connections - Right click on your Local Area Connection (I think yours is 2) - Go to Properties.

Once inside the properties of the connection double click on "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)"

Select "Use the following IP address" and enter in a valid IP on your network. You can run the ipconfig program on your laptop to get all of this information. eg. 192.168.0.100

Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is the address of your router. This will also show up in the ipconfig on your laptop.

After doing this you can hit OK to the screen and work your way back out of the control panel. Once you're back to your desktop click on Start - Run - CMD - hit enter. At the dos screen type "ping 192.168.0.1" where the IP address is your gateway. Hit enter.

This hopefully will reply back. If it does then we know its a problem with DHCP which is easily fixed by assigning yourself a static IP. If it does not then we will have to troubleshoot the issue more.

You wouldn't need DNS set to ping the router. There is likely something wrong with the drivers to your network card or the network card itself.

Unplug the ethernet cables going into the router first, then replug them in(Don't ask me but this actually worked for me one time when I had a similar problem). If that doesn't work, try restarting the router.
