I wanted to do an informal survey for people who have voted...I have heard from a number of radio callers today, voting both parties, from North Carolina and South Carolina in a number of different cities and towns...many of them said they were not asked to show ID when they went to their polling place to vote today...so how about you all?

I think (and I'm attempting to be 100% non partisan here) that regardless of who you vote for...with all of the reports (from both Dems and Reps) about voter fraud, vote machine tampering, etc...its quite important for each polling place to do THEIR part to assure a fair election, regardless of who wins...I wonder how many of the people who help run the polling places will fail to check hundreds if not thousands of IDs today, and then complain when there are discrepancies at their polling place

I was not asked for ID.

The idea behind not asking for ID is that, since IDs aren't free, it amounts to a poll tax.

I am still very uneasy about it, though. Anybody could have easily looked up my registration online after picking my name out of the phone book and voted in my stead.

I was thinking it was more of a supposed inconvenience thing...like "oh we dont want you to have to go to the trouble of reaching into your wallet/purse and pulling out your ID because that would inconvenience you"

haha Mark Sanford (governor of South Cack) actually had to go home from the polling place and get his ID...even though his voter registration card's address had the governor's mansion in Columbia lol

it is still one vote for one person, and you are preregistered, so i dont see what the real problem is. send someone else to vote for you? fine. if someone else votes in your place w/o your permission, then it will be found out. who would do that, though?

- people (or people's identities) voting more than once
- dead people voting

etc

It just seems in general that you would want the most accurate results from all parties, sides and polling places

TO GET THIS THREAD BACK ON TOPIC (who knew with tree posting it would deviate to some bullshit)

not having to show ID doesn't really bother me. maybe if there was some kind of evidence of people in NC voting for other people or voting as dead people or whatever, i would reevaluate my opinion on the matter.

i just dont see someone really taking the time to go through all the trouble to look up your voter registration information, find out your designated polling place, memorize your address and then actually go out and vote for you

Nope wasnt asked for ID. My neighbor actually was my poll worker

And we do not need ID for voting, as there has not been a rash of voter fraud....hmm..ever. Could there be one day? Sure, but a back door poll tax is not the way to go.



And sort of on topic, does anyone here think we need a more streamlined national voting system? I have some ideas, but does anyone think this method of 50 different types of voting is better than one?

Was asked for my Voter Registration card and was forced to sign it in order to vote (I had forgotten)

This is for South Carolina (where the Governor wasn't allowed to vote because he forgot his registration card, dumbass)

i don't really see requiring ID as a "backdoor poll tax" given its requirement for just about everything else in life. and voter id cards certainly are free, and don't require a state-issued ID to obtain

but in general I agree with the sentiment -- the level of voter fraud isn't sufficient to significantly impact many (if any) races. this amounts to a disincentive to actually commit fraud, particularly when weighed against the consequences for being caught. balance that against the incentive for normal voters not to vote at all as they stand in line, have their identification verified, etc etc etc -- and in the end I think it turns out for the better


but, as for the topic in general -- in North Carolina, Board of Elections workers are banned from asking for any additional identification beyond what is allowed under state law. Which, right now, amounts to "state your name and address please"

didn't you read the sign? the law requires that you state your name, address, and party. there is no requirement by law to show an id. why would you then be disturbed that you weren't asked to show one?
