...appears to have passed by a huge margin. It got a majority in every county in the state.
It’s basically a life sentence for every single sex crime. In addition to giving longer sentences for some sex crimes, it says that sex offenders must be tracked with GPS for life, never mind the huge cost of actually doing so, and that they cannot ever again live within 2000 feet of a school or a park. The sex crimes in question need not involve children or even another human being. Many of them are in fact thought crimes.
I know of no greater indictment of direct democracy than the passage of this piece of shit.

How would having a GPS tracker placed on them prevent them from repeat offenses anyway? The computer says he's in his house now... everything is okay. 11/8/2006 3:08:05 PM |

Minority Report time... lol (slippery slope)
I will say I am very upset with the way sex offenders who have been released are treated. To me, if you're going to release them into the public again, you should not be treating them as second-class citizens. I don't even like the sex-offender list. Seems like a "murderer" list would be important too, right?
My soltution: Tougher standards for release Throw away the key provisions for repeat offenders. 11/8/2006 3:22:53 PM |

I think the biggest issue here isn't whether or not it will work to cut down on sexual violence, but whether or not it will ultimately turn into a nationwide method for use on everybody. 11/8/2006 3:22:59 PM |

That is a horribly overstated summary of it. Jesus.. First off it's not for EVERY sexual offense. Second of all it's not even close to 'basically a life sentence' for every offender.
This is the most complete explanation I could find
Quote : | "Proposition 83 would:
* Prohibit registered sex offenders from living within 2000 feet of a school, park or other location selected by local government. * Require lifetime satellite monitoring of felony sex offenders. * Impose a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years to life for rapists of children. * Extend parole from three to 10 years for those convicted of serious sex crimes. * Boost penalties for possession of child pornography and Internet luring. * Allow an offender to be classified as a sexually violent predator after assault on one victim, instead of two. * Permit confinement of released sexually violent predators in state mental hospitals for an indeterminate term, rather than two years. I support this proposition now.

Such as?
This is probably bullshit, but I'm not quite sure. I wouldn't surprise me if it is. In California, having anything that looks remotely like a "throwing star" is a felony. They have stupid laws.11/8/2006 5:19:53 PM |

That's going a bit too far. I mean you could save time by hiring them a young kid to suck their dick everyday after work for good behavior. 11/8/2006 5:26:26 PM |

Well, I think child pornography or solicitation of a police officer you thought was a minor are felonies that would fall in this category, right?11/8/2006 6:17:30 PM |

This shit is retarded
If the sex offender isn't rehabilitated, why are they being let out of prison? Where is my murder/violent crims registery list? Where is my property crimes registery list?
child pornography is not a victimless crime.

It is for the most part. I voted NO on this, but only because I think along the same lines of what ^ said.. I understand what they are trying to do and other states have passed certain parts of the Prop, but not as inclusive.
^ also I could be wrong on this but I don't believe that solicitation of a minor (who happens to be a police officer) is a felony included under this prop...
