So the Engineering Career Fair was held in October and ExxonMobil was present. ON THE MORNING OF THE DAMN FAIR, one of EM's recruiters decides to send me an email requesting my presence at their booth to set up an interview for a summer internship (they got a copy of my resume from the CHE department resume book). Only one small problem with this request.
I'm in Richmond on cooperative education and couldn't make the career fair.
In Goddamn hindsight, I could have made the career fair since it started @ 9 and ended at 4. I just didn't have any "Comp Time" (we don't get overtime, just extra hours saved to use whenever) saved up and I was pretty sure I was doing research over the summer at either NC State or another campus. After finding out I don't need to do research over the summer since I'll have opportunities during the academic year for such, I decided to pursue the internship.
So I then emailed the recruiters who were present at NC State about my interest in a summer internship, filled out an online application at the corporate website, and waited for about a month. I didn't get any response from either of the recruiters initially, so I emailed them again on Monday (Nov. 6). Good news and bad news. One told me all the internship positions had been filled; I don't know if this meant nationally or just in her recruiting sector (Beaumont, Texas). The other one (the NC State Alum, GG Wolfpack!) told me he'd set aside 30 min to speak with me about my interests and EM's available opportunities.
Long story short, this was a surprise phone interview and I guess I performed well. Now I can understand that I'm very late in the game and all the recruiting for summer internships are probably coming to a close, and not many spots anywhere within the company are left. However, he told me I'd be placed as a "runner up" for an internship position at his location (Houston, TX) should anyone decline their offers - all of them being taken. He'd also call around to the other locations (California, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans) to see if they have any internship slots open and if I could be placed at one of these locations.
Basically, my question for you all is should I not hold my breath in hoping for a position? Was his "offer" a kind way of letting me down without saying "Get Lost"? He sounded pleased with my phone interview and blown away with my resume. What do you all think? 11/10/2006 10:57:03 AM |

Sometimes, but a lot of places hire for summer by Oct/Nov. Especially for Gov't internships this summer and campaign internships. All the places I looked at were hiring in Sept/ Oct/ Nov (except for one place in Phila)
And law students should have their internship lined up by atleast September/October, I just thought I would throw that out, dont know why11/20/2006 7:46:15 PM |

Exxon and any other major petroleum company is like the holy grail for some ChemEs
But you have to be good, like better than good. I believe 3 of our Valedictorians last year got jobs with Exxon and it was only the Valedictorians.
Pay is definitely way above average and its probably worth it if you think you'd enjoy working in or at a refinery. So if you like what you'll be doing there over the summer, make sure you do your best to show that you like it to the right people and don't slack off.
Personally, I don't think it would be something I'd like. 11/20/2006 7:51:12 PM |

Never be too excited about any one position. I "thought" I had two positions pretty much handed to me when I graduated, but due to political reasons unrelated to me, both of them fell through. Keep your options open. 11/20/2006 9:02:25 PM |

^^^If for some reason this opportunity does falls through, then I'll be going to Wilmington (Delaware) to work at DuPont's engineering headquarters.

Exxon did about the same thing to me, emailed me the day of the Minority Career fair asking if I could stop buy. I was actually in class when I found the email. I ended up not getting the co-op (DuPont in Richmond for me), but kinda bad on their part for not getting these meetings set up ahead of time.
Not as bad as Millikin (sp?) though, cancelling my interview with them about half an hour before the interview was supposed to happen (a 9am one too!). They sent a generic email through ePack a week or two ago saying I had been accepted for an interview though, way after I got my co-op. I lol'd. 11/20/2006 10:40:05 PM |
