This guy was a fucking master. It's a shame his last movie had to be A Prairie Home Companion, but he will definitely be missed.
I guess it's time for PTA to fully take the reins.

There's nothing shameful about A Prairie Home Companion. It's a fine movie.

That man is one of those "I've made a handful of good movies early in my career so now everything I shit on is going to turn out gold" kind of people. Hell, even reviewers for "The Company" said that the film was mediocre but that "diehard altman fans will probably think it is oscar worthy." 11/21/2006 2:12:29 PM |
screentest All American 1955 Posts user info edit post |
You're right, because The Company (a movie about fucking ballet dancers!) sucked then the entire career of a prolific filmmaker should be illegitimatized. 11/21/2006 2:42:10 PM |

I can name a string of shitty movies he has done:
The Company Dr. T. and the Women Cookie's Fortune The Gingerbread Man Kansas City Jazz '34 Pret-a-Porter Vincent and Theo Beyond Therapy
and that's just the last 10 years...
Not to mention Brewser McCloud is one of my worst film experiences, and Three Women is one of the most overrated shitty metaphorical peices of crap I've ever laid eyes on.
If you look at his films he has an average of below 6 on most of them, the only good rated ones are Short Cuts, Nashville, Mash, McCabe & Mrs. Miller.
Point is, the guy lived on for too long and was way too prolific. Stanley Kubrick lived roughly the exact same time span (a tad shorter) and only made around 14 feature films which are all excellent, compared to Altman's 100+.
Oh and finally:

^^I can't comment on most of those movies as I haven't seen them. However, I do take umbrage with you saying Quote : | "Point is, the guy lived on for too long and was way too prolific." |
What the fuck does that mean? You're telling me the guy should have died sooner? That he should have made less films? That'd be like me telling you to sell less popcorn or to play less video games or to look at less obscene and disturbing things on the internet. Granted, I probably have told you those things before, but you should as I hope Robert Altman would, tell whoever tells you how to live your life to "Fuck off."11/21/2006 3:57:56 PM |

I have liked pretty much every Kubrick film I've seen. Liked a lot of Scorsese. Hitchcock, Spielberg, Welles - all those guys have made some great movies that I've really enjoyed. But I have never loved any of their films. Robert Altman has made at least 3 films that I love with all my heart.
I'm certainly glad he didn't live his life to please some dude who would've "rather him produce 10 movies"

37 movies from 1970 to 2006 = 1 per year = too much. That's practically making movie after movie without delay, if you include pre and post production.
My main problem that I have with Altman, that I've had since I had the "Stanley Kubrick and Robert Altman" class at NCSU, is that he has no comprehensible style. Aside from having overlapping audio and casting Shelley Duvall in every fucking movie he makes he has absolutely no "vision" or "metaphor" in any of his films that make any sense. He completely shoots a hole in the auteur theory. 11/21/2006 5:55:35 PM |

Scoop was a solid movie. Match Point was good. I think both Melinda and Melinda and Anything Else are underrated. In the course of 30 years he's only had one string (beginning with Small Time Crooks - which some people do kinda like) of consecutively not good movies.11/23/2006 3:48:49 PM |

Altman and Allen are both great American filmmakers who produced a large number of movies. After that, the similarities (as pertaining to film) between the two end.

I don't think Allen's more recent stuff lives up to some of the earlier ones (mainly 1970s-1980s) by any means, but that's just my opinion. 11/23/2006 4:34:06 PM |
screentest All American 1955 Posts user info edit post |
^his recent stuff may not live up to the quality of his early stuff, but that doesn't mean they aren't quality. And I'd say as recently as Sweet and Lowdown (1999) his quality remained as high as it was at his peak. Now, I agree that he hasn't been quite as high in most recent years. But "not-quite-as-high" Woody Allen can still be immensly enjoyable and significantly better than most. 11/23/2006 4:50:41 PM |
