Basically, because at that time (1987) NC State was 100 times more civil and nobody thought anyone could be so audacious and trashy. That's why.

i was 3 when it happened, so im not an expert, but here is alittle bit more info...

Quote :
"For their part, the Pirates have sometimes themselves been the ones who have infuriated their neighbors in the Piedmont. Their fans are loud and proud, which is not bad, but they can also show an ugly side from time to time. In the 1980's, ECU and NC State played an annual football game, and in 1987, the Pirates' fans tore down the goalposts in Carter-Finley stadium after their team had beaten the Wolfpack. A near riot erupted, and arrests were made. Oddly though, none of those arrested were ECU students or alumni -- they were just fans out of control. ECU was nonetheless blamed in the minds of Wolfpack fans, and to this day, the subject comes up from time to time. Then, when NCSU lent the Pirates their stadium to play Miami in (Ficklen Stadium was damaged due to a hurricane) and the Pirate fans again struck, tearing down the goalposts when they defeated the (cough) Hurricanes. ECU laudibly paid for any damage, but again the ire of Wolfpack fans were raised. And Pack fans have a long memory -- ask Dean Smith.

After the first incident, Athletic Director Jim Valvano discontinued the football series with ECU. The teams would not meet until 1992, in the Peach Bowl, a game that ECU won.

After the Peach Bowl, ECU wanted the series to resume, but NCSU would not schedule the Pirates. ECU then turned to allies in the NC Legislature, who demanded that the teams play. Thus, the series was rekindled, albeit every three years. The next meeting is November 27th in Charlotte, and if it lives up to the bulk of Pirate versus Pack affairs, it ought to be a good ballgame. Throw out the record books, they say, which is a good thing for both teams...both are down on their luck. In fact, the NCSU game marks the end of ECU head coach John Thompson's tenture in Greenville. You can bet that the purple and gold will come ready to play, and despite their impressive pedigrees, the Wolfpack players had better be ready for a battle. After all, the ECU side refers to games with NCSU as "The Backyard Brawl."

When you really think about it, it is disappointing that these two schools in the UNC system cannot sit down at the table and create an annual home and home series that would undoubtedly be some of the most highly attended games in North Carolina. In the 1970's and early 1980's, this was often the first game of the season, and it was a sure sellout. If the teams were to again meet annually, it would undoubtedly be the same way again.

In 2004, seventeen years have passed since the 1987 game. That would mean that a freshman at either school would be around 35 years old today, and that said, a new generation of students is attending both universities. In the meantime, both have grown -- ECU is the academic hub of eastern North Carolina, and NCSU has become the largest university in the state, based on student enrollment.

^^^ still, I mean, they had to be outnumbered 5 to 1 at least... I have to admit, that was ballsy (and yes trashy) by ECU

^ good stuff

well you have to remember that not many pack fans wanted to get too close to ecu fans for fear of becoming infected with something

State fans were a lot classer back then. As for the whole ECU / Miami think it did not bother me that much when they tore the post down. I doubt it will happen at this game!

not to mention the 9820735243254326 cops with giant bottles of pepper spray when we are just playing someone like Akron and losing. I imagine they will have even more at this game.

here's to random rednecks getting drunk and brawling tomorrow. We've gotta make something of the pile of shit that was the 2006 NC State Football Season.

My dad was at this game. There were quite a few fights on the hill. Apparently some of them ended up going as far as the bottom of the hill and causing some real trouble during the game.
