And that's why you don't walk on a frozen lake. That guy needs a vacation after that.

Survivorman would kill this guy with his bare hands, then use his body as a raft to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.

I find it impossible to believe that RachelMarie would advocate "This guy puts Survivor Man to shame". Clearly someone hacked her t-dub account with malicious intent to slander her good name.

"Survivorman is back in action! In just under one week I will be flying to the Amazon jungle in Ecuador to do the first shoot of the new season. It has taken quite a while to get to this stage but I, along with my production partner Dave Brady and our production team are thrilled to be in the middle of a ridiculously hectic schedule right now, ramping up the activities for Survivorman.

And don't worry, same set up, just me alone with only my camera gear. But the locations have become a bit more exotic. Along with the Amazon, I am expecting to go to the Australian Outback, the African desert, the African bushland, the Alaskan coast and the rough scoured rock of northern Labrador. "

then he climbed back UP the waterfall. it was all done for looks. in a real situation where there was a waterfall, is he suggesting someone should repel down it? if you slip and break an ankle, you're dead - alone in the middle of a rain forest

More like intentionally jumps into a frozen stream, is ready for it all along, never becomes submerged, and has a hot fire with a dry tinder bundle waiting. This guy is all show. How can you take a person seriously when they don't even have any vowels in their last name?!

Les Stroud would make a crossbow out of a shoelace, two sticks, and a bicycle spoke, and shoot Bear in the jugular from atop his perch in the forest canopy. He could survive for months on the remains.

that's the whole point ..... he was trying to point out the things you need to have prepared if you're going to try and cross a frozen lake. he intentionally started the fire. if you fall in you go back to your fire and dry off and try again. if you don't fall in ... every thing's good and you continue on.

Survivor man is Ok.

What I'm digging is Everest: Beyond on the Limits but I'm a mountaineer myself. This year was the worst year on Everest since 1996 when Jon Krakauer wrote about that cluster-fuck in Into Thin Air. So I'm kinda curious to see how the series develops.

I've been watching both these shows from the beginning and have the following thoughts:

First off, and don't kill me, I think Bear knows a bit more and is better at doing some of the survival things. He seems to be able to fish and hunt with a bit more luck than Les (However I have a tiny suspicion that some of the stuff that Bear runs into is just a little too coincidental...like the horse and the rabbit in that episode). Whereas Les' traps and things don't always work, and it's often difficult for him to start fire (although that is part of what appeals to me, its a bit more real)...he often has an expert help him for a while before his survival time. Les is sometimes more resourceful too...I remember watching the arctic episode of Man vs. Wild and thinking for 20 minutes, "MAKE SOME DAMN SNOW SHOES", and probably thought that because I saw Les do it right away.

I also think that Bear does a lot of things that look really cool, but some are completely unnecessary. I DID like him jumping in the frozen lake and also jumping off the "cliff" earlier in that episode to show how those knots on the string worked (because I didn't believe it would). But he quite often will climb up a waterfall or something, saying its the fastest way, when there's probably some stairs just 10 feet away or something. It's like he has a giant hill to go down so he says, "Well the best way to go down, and coolest looking, is to just run and jump really high, so here I go!" (see the hill in the volcano episode).

Lastly though, I like the format of Les' show (7 days), where Bear just has to get somewhere...and Les has to deal with a whole lot more shit with all that equipment. So I am a bigger fan of Survivorman

climbing up a waterfall, jumping off cliffs, all the stuff Bear does would be risky to the point of suicidal if he were actually stranded in the wild.

I prefer Survivorman

Bear does stage his stuff. In the Sierra episode he stays mostly by the Shuteye road, though, he's kinda all over the place in that episode rather than going from A to B. I kinda imagine he jumps out of a freezing river and into an RV and then talks with the crew about what crazy stunt they can pull next.

it sucks that by the nature of the show it has limited episodes...

I felt bad for max when he found the guy dying

I'm more interested in survivorman from a pure "what if that happend to me" standpoint, but man vs wild is rather good at conveying useful knowledge and tips as well

what bugged me about jumping into the ice water is that he had very visible holes made in the ice for him to grab on to in which pull himself out with.

I liek the one where Bear gets stranded on an island. Bitch jumps out of a helicopter a few miles away from land and swims in. He is pretty awesome, his scenarios are a little more plausible but they are both good shows.

his shit is all completely planned out though

he has a crew

he has a plan

its obvious he knows exactly where he is going, how to get there, and what to expect along the way

none of that is very plausible in a real survival situation

He has a cameraman.

Quote :
"Throughout each gnarly adventure, Grylls is able to narrate his experience surprisingly well. While in the lake, he treads water for a bit while describing the most common reasons people die when they fall into freezing water. If it weren't impossible to stage some of the show's scenarios, it would be hard to believe that Grylls didn't get frequent help from his production crew. But our fearless host did survive three years in the British Special Forces, where he broke his back and lived to scale Mount Everest."

Yeh...that's what I thought too...but the holes were there before he jumped and if you looked his feet didn't even start to dig into the snow, meaning that whatever "made" the holes and had to apply more force than his feet could have.

I always felt that I learned a bit more from Man v Wild. Plus after that volcano episode, that's one twisted situation to be in. I was all freaked out that at any moment in time the guy would fall through the rock and into liquid mamgma.

Then again, both of these guys are freaking nuts.
