Hey,

Just seeing if you guys might can help me....I got a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 360 engine. I was burning coolant and thought it might be a cracked head. I went into the engine and found a crack on the number 6 cylinder dome. Is this a pretty regular problem with the 5.9L engines? This is the second one i've had to fix (2 different dodges) Also there has been a drivetrain whine(high pitch) at 20mph. Someone suggested it was the carrier bearings so I replaced them along with wheel bearings and pinion cone bearings. I still have a slight whine. I've replaced all fluids including transfer case, tranny, and diff. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

318's like to crack heads i thought 360's had beefier heads and that's why ppl swapped their 318's for them.

about the whine it's coming from ur rear diff? my truck did that before it locked up the diff (94 1500 318 4x4). it was a loose pinion bolt that caused that.

check out dodgeforum.com ppl are always bitching bout their rams breakin on there.

cracked heads is not a common issue with the 318 or the 360.

so is the auto. they just requires extra routine maintinance/attention that most people don't give it. the stock cooler does a very poor job of keeping the temps within acceptable ranges also.

the transmissions themselves are pretty strong, they've just gotten a bad reputation based on outside factors.

that said, none of the big 3 have really made an auto worth writing home about since the late 80's or so.
