When buying a drive a good rule of thumb is to expect it to never outlast the warranty.

Drive manufacturers are not stupid. They base their warranty figures on the MTBF (mean time between failure) statistics for each unit and the sooner a particular model of drive fails the shorter its warranty period will be.

If you are looking at a drive that has a 1 year warranty and you still plan to be using it full time by this date next year look for a different drive.

In my experience Seagate has been the best. And the 5 year warranty doesn't hurt.

At work my client HDD failure history breaks down like this:

Since July 2005:

Maxtor: 19 (Seagate bought them out so things could start looking up)

WD: 4

Seagate: 1

I've had Maxtors die on me, very unpleasant experiences. Western Digital on the other hand has never failed me. That's why I recently just picked up a 250 GB and external enclosure for my laptop, which is filled to the max.

I've actually never had a Maxtor die on me but I saw plenty at work that did. My most recent one was a dead Western Digital though.

Yes. They also have the longest warranty which is no coincidence.

I have had multiple WDs die, multiple Maxtors die and I am hesitant to use them again because of the pain of a drive failure.

Go with Seagate.

that's great. I've managed atleast 500 machines in the last few years, the majority of them coming with WD oem drives (dells) and I've seen ~6 drive failures. In my personal machines I've had atleast 16 maxtor drives, 1 died after about 2 years of uptime constantly seeking/writing/reading, I've bought maybe 4 or 5 seagates recently as they've just started getting cheap and offering the best warranty, no failures set. The majority of the failures I have seen are due to shitty ide controller/power supply design (read dell 6000 series dimension laptops).

had a few ibm 600 series have hitachi drives die, but that must have been <1%. fujitsu desktop drives I'm 0/1 on as it died in a year but I think it was refurbished and on my first machine

of the 9 drives I actually purchased myself, 4 were Seagate, 2 were western digital, and the first 3 were maxtor. 2 of the maxtors died within the first two years. Since then I've never touched another maxtor drive. I've never had any problems with Seagate or Western Digital drives and I've got a Seagate drive that's about 7 years old still running fine. Sadly it seems tiny at this point.
