would a base model macbook pro be usable for final cut, or would i need to get a powermac g5? I know upgradability with laptops is null, but the portability would be useful and I could always use a cinemascreen if I wanted a bigger desktop area....

GET A PC

I've read a lot that people have been able to do lots of video/audio editing on the macbook pros, and say that they prefer doing all their work on the mbpro because of it's power and portability.

You probably would get better performance and probably more power out of a pimped out mac desktop. Either way on both computers, you'd probably want a shitload of RAM

Whatever you do, though, don't do any video editing on a powerbook. I've done minimal amounts on mine (2 yrs old now) and it can barely do it, and takes absolutely forever to put together a DVD.

Yeah, I know about the RAM requirements, however I am wondering if the Macbook's 2.66ghz processor and the motherboard/bus/etc can handle Final Cut, because that would be much more difficult to upgrade.

Macbook Pro ought to serve you fine, provided that you deck it out with lots of RAM. I'm using the original MBP right now, w/ the max 2 GB, and i can do a hell of a lot.

the trick is going to be if the version of final cut you're using is a Universal Binary or not. that will make a lot of difference.

you should go with a new Mac Pro desktop if you're heavily into video editing, and you have a lot of cash to drop on a new box.

Mac Pro or Macbook Pro....

G5 is history.

get the new Core 2 Macbook Pro with tons of ram (comes out of box with 2gb vs 1gb with the regular Core Duo)

but if you really want a beast...go with the Mac Pro. ($Texas)

yeah, thats what i was saying. Just don't buy the black one. I got what they call the "ultimate white" at the store (80GB HDD, DVD-RW, and 2.0Ghz proc, 1GB ram) then sold the memory in it and doubled it....but i would reccomend getting the same sans factory upgraded memory

UNC and NCSU bookstores now have a deal where you get macbook and macbook pro's for an extra 100-150 off education pricing and free printer. Means White MacBook with 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB Ram, Superdrive, 80GB Harddrive AND applecare is 1282.00. The only snag for these deals are that you have get the applecare to get the extra discount.

The free printer is a Cannon MP160.

Think they're already in stock at UNC. NCSU Bookstores ordered them and they'll probably be in soon, but they're a limited time only thing.
