"Duke put together the top basketball recruiting class in the nation four times in the past 10 years. And the Blue Devils are on the brink of doing it again.

After signing three of the country’s best 21 seniors, based on prepstars.com rankings, Duke is No. 1 in our rating of the top 25 hauls during the early signing period.

Duke had the nation’s premier classes in 1997 (Elton Brand, Shane Battier), 1999 (Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy), 2002 (Shelden Williams, J.J. Redick) and 2005 (Josh McRoberts, Greg Paulus).

The Blue Devils could strengthen their 2007 hold by landing Patrick Patterson. The nation’s No. 13 prospect, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Huntington (W.Va.) High School, is also considering Wake Forest, Kentucky and Florida.

N.C. State, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech give the Atlantic Coast Conference five of the elite classes to this point. The 2007 hoops recruiting will be finalized with spring signings.

Ohio State, which was second behind North Carolina last year, is No. 2 again. Syracuse, Purdue and Florida complete our first five. Michigan State, Southern Cal, Arizona, Georgetown and Indiana round out the top 10.

Following is our ranking of the top 25 fall classes:

1. Duke — No. 5 Kyle Singler (6-9 power forward from Oregon) heads a three-man group that also includes No. 17 Taylor King (6-7 California small forward) and No. 21 Nolan Smith (6-2 Virginia wing guard).

2. Ohio State — No. 14 Kosta Koufos (6-11 center from Ohio), No. 38 Dallas Lauderdale (6-8 Ohio power forward) and No. 48 Evan Turner (6-6 Illinois small forward) lead five top-100 additions.

3. Syracuse — Its five-man class has three top-50 players in No. 3 Donte Green (6-8 Maryland power forward), No. 29 Johnny Flynn (5-10 New York point guard) and No. 46 Antonio Jardine (6-3 Pennsylvania wing guard).

4. Purdue — No. 32 E’Twaun Moore (6-3 Indiana point guard) and No. 41 Scott Martin (6-7 Indiana small forward) plus two more from the top 100.

5. Florida — The defending national champions sign No. 19 Nick Calathes (6-5 Florida combination guard), two others from the top 100 and four in all.

6. Michigan State — All three additions are in the top 50: No. 30 Durrell Summers (6-4 Michigan wing guard), No. 39 Kalin Lucas (6-1 Michigan point guard) and No. 49 Chris Allen (6-3 Georgia wing guard).

7. Southern Cal — Getting No. 1 O.J. Mayo (6-4 West Virginia wing guard) and No. 80 Leonard Washington (6-7 Louisiana small forward) earns USC a high ranking.

8. Arizona — Five signees include two of the top 100, No. 10 Jerryd Bayless (6-3 Arizona wing guard) and No. 27 Jamelle Horne (6-6 California small forward).

9. Georgetown — Backcourt of the future in No. 16 Austin Freeman (6-4 Maryland wing guard) and No. 23 Chris Wright (6-1 D.C. point guard).

10. Indiana — No. 2 Eric Gordon (6-4 Indiana wing guard) and three from the second 100.

11. N.C. State — Sidney Lowe’s first class has two big names in No. 20 J.J. Hickson (6-8 Georgia power forward) and No. 34 Tracy Smith (6-7 power forward from Durham).

12. UCLA — No. 4 Kevin Love (6-9 California center) is the prize of two top-100 catches.

13. Kansas State — Two of four signatures are from the top 100, with No. 7 Mike Beasley (6-9 Massachusetts power forward) circled in red.

14. Florida State — Newcomer trio is distinguished by a pair of high-number big men in No. 25 Solomon Alabi (7-0 Florida center) and No. 33 Julian Vaughn (6-9 Virginia power forward).

15. Memphis — No. 6 Derrick Rose (6-3 Illinois point guard) is the main man in a three-prospect class.

16. Georgia Tech — All three signees are in the top 100: No. 22 Gani Lawal (6-8 Georgia power forward), No. 77 Maurice Miller (6-1 Tennessee point guard) and No. 89 Lance Storrs (6-4 Georgia wing guard).

17. Texas — The treasured autograph is from No. 11 Gary Johnson (6-7 Texas power forward), and there are two other big men.

18. Villanova — A pair of New Jersey Coreys in No. 18 Stokes (6-5 wing guard) and No. 36 Fisher (6-0 point guard).

19. Michigan — No. 28 Alex Legion (6-5 Virginia wing guard), another top-100 guy and a third from the top 150.

20. Kansas — A strong pair in No. 37 Cole Aldrich (6-11 Minnesota center) and No. 40 Tyrel Reed (6-3 Kansas point guard).

21. LSU — No. 9 Anthony Randolph (6-10 Texas power forward) and three others.

22. Virginia Tech — Five signees, with the best known being No. 58 Dorenzo Hudson (6-4 Virginia wing guard) and No. 60 Jeff Allen (6-8 Virginia power forward).

23. Arizona State — Herb Sendek starts with a group of three, led by No. 26 James Harden (6-4 California wing guard). *aha*

24. DePaul — Top-100 duo headed by No. 42 Darquavis Tucker (6-4 Michigan swing man).

25. Washington — Two of three signees are from the top 100, with No. 35 Matthew Bryan-Amaning (6-8 Connecticut power forward) the headliner"

Lucas may not be as long of a shot as you think. I was positive JJ wouldnt sign with us when we first started talking about him, and look where that ended up.

Plus, if you look at all of Jai's schools, the ones he has scheduled visits to all have met their point guard needs for next year. Thats the reason he hasnt verbal'd yet.

I want Sidney to work some magic on him over christmas and see where this gets us. I actually like our chances with this kid.

UNC doesn't have a recruiting class. Is this because they are out of scholarships? wouldn't that mean if guys go pro they are screwed?

i think lucas would have signed somewhere by now if he wasn't seriously considering the pack.

our situation is perfect for him. i'm gonna predict that we land him. no insider info, just my gut feeling.

I dont think he specifically held off signing b/c of NC State, but he DID hold off because all his top choices recruited PG's in front of him. He still has offers, but he wants to play. He's looking for a good situation to go into, and NC State just recently came into the picture.

Nothing unusual. ACC always dominates in recruiting, just the talent leaves early too often or used to go straight to the NBA.

How in the hell does FSU always pull in these top classes and continue to not make the NCAAs?

Your only allowed to give out a total of 8 scholarships within 2 years so UNC basically maxed out this last year so hopefully a few will transfer or go pro and we will end up in a great situation

Purdue is going to become good under Matt Painter....he is a good coach.

I am a little biased because I have meet him before, I believe he is originally from NC. Or at least I do know he was an assistant at Barton College.

I'm mildly oblivious to details outside of the ACC. How the fuck does OSU get two classes back to back like this? I'm too lazy to see who is coaching them (if that is the reason).

one of the things i like about havin sid & the new offense now (and this is not knocking herb, just an observation) is that we we land big recruits, like herb did a number of times, we'll actually get to see these guys play extensively before their sophomore or junior years. we might have some impact freshmen, rather than guys learning the system and keeping the far end of the bench warm.

^^^^we never fired herb. i was pissed off when herb left because i wasn't sure who we'd end up with. as soon as lowe was announced i felt like we were in good hands and was no longer mad. this was before he got any recruits and before he won any games.

Scout.com has us at 19 this year. In 2005 we were 11 per scout. Hodges class was also Top 12 I believe but I can't find it..

http://secure.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=9371

I completely forgot he was a PG but never played w/ the team..

V Fells, McCauley, and Costner might have been Top 50.. they were all 4 and 5 *s...

Lucas has us at Low Interest, hasn't visited (did visit 4 other places), and hasn't been offered. I'd say it's a longshot from the articles I read that he comes here. Frankly, I look at his size and I'm skeptical he could play in the ACC. 5'9" 145? I'm bigger than that... He must be ridiculously quick. Plus I don't want to see his fucking father on the sidelines every game. I saw enough of that at Ok State...

I think we've had several of Herb's classes pretty high.

I'm pretty sure Hodge's class was in the top 5-10. Everybody we signed that year other than Evtimov was a top 100 recruit. Hodge was top 10 in almost every ranking. Collins was top 100, Powell was top 75-60, Levi was top 50-75.

The Scooter/Marcus Melvin class was pretty high. Scooter was a McDAA and Melvin was a top 50-60 recruit.

And his next to last class of Fells, Costner, and McCauley was pretty good. Costner was a McDAA, Fells was top 30-50, and McCauley was a top 75-100.

Anybody remember who else was in Damien Wilkin's class??

Alot of people overlook Ced, B-rack and Gavin....Ced and B-rack were both top50 and Grant wasn't far off the top-50 himself. In my opinion, that may have been Herb's best class here in terms of talent. The Hodge class was great in that he brought in a lot of really good players but none were the caliber of Ced, B-rack and Gavin except Hodge of course.

Anybody know if we are still offering Ty Walker for 2008? It seems everyone is saying we're going after a guard but I remember us offering him. Has that changed?

^Yeah...I can't believe I forgot about that class.

Ced was easily top 50, top 30 in some rankings. UNC and Wake definitely wanted in on him, but Herb reeled him in really early...I think we got a commitment at the beginning of his junior year.

Grant was consistently top 50-60. I think Brackman moved from the top 100 to around 60 by the time he was finished with his senior. Very good class.
