H'okay, so.... I thought I would surely head back to a company in Morrisville where I interned a couple of months ago. I'm now having a hard time overlooking a large company near Richmond who are offering a much nicer compensation/benefits package.

Beyond my obvious dilemma of deciding which position I prefer, I need to learn more about the Richmond area. How many people live/work or are generally familiar with the area? The company is located a couple of miles East of downtown in Sandston, and I have heard about living near The Fan as a popular "young professional" area. What are the costs of living like compared to living in Raleigh or Morrisville? I had been looking at purchasing my first home if I took the job in Morrisville, and might do the same in Richmond. I am not opposed to renting my first year or so though if I decide on Richmond, until I get used to the city and make sure I want to stick around for atleast a couple of years.

Are there any obvious pointers or concerns that would help with my decision or just general advice about the area? Other popular moderately priced suburbs? As a general benchmark, I was looking at 3/2.5 1500sqft. homes with a garage around $150-160k near Raleigh.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm starting to look at places to live there for next semester (very late I know) so this thread has interest to me.

So does this one:

A friend of mine moved there 18 months ago and had trouble buying a home because the market was so competitive. I'm sure it's cooled down some now, but homes are probably still pricier than Raleigh (just my guess - I did not bother to search any cost of living stuff).

Oh I searched, and uncovered a pair of threads. Some good opinions on the city and some bad. I guess I was looking for a more tailored response. Found some good info about renting but little about purchasing a home. I'll keep searching and PMing a couple of people.

Also, ThePeter or anyone else co-oping for Dupont or other companies, feel free to IM me if you're searching for housing.

I be in Richmond now, spent the past two days trying to get my apartment utilities in order along with getting my furniture and internet delivered. Sucks having no internet! Can't deliver till Saturday so I've been cruising around, went to the Short Pump outdoor mall thingy earlier. I didn't know malls could be outdoorsy like that. I'd go downtown but I'm all fuckin alone up here, roommate moves in this weekend. Having no one to explore with kinda puts the damper on downtown exploration I think.

richmonds older but bigger than raleigh
homes are more expensive than here (b/c they appreciated more)
the fan is good area for young ppl like u said
they are revitalizing downtown too
they have better infrastructure (highways, tollways, etc)
closer to DC
good amusement parks (busch gardens, kings dominion)
virginia beach
come to think of it, no pro sports team

homes are generally more expensive, for what you are looking for it'd be around $230K for something new....this is because new home communities are scarce (they seem to control growth more) and ppl from DC moving down to richmond

^^Richmond Braves

and Richmond is the most southern Northern city or most northern Southern city. It straddles the sweet tea line.

I live in Richmond, moving to Baltimore soon though. Hope it works out for you, I never really got used to it- not that I am expecting Baltimore to be much better but who knows!

There are some pretty good bars around though...let me know if you want details
