I'm posting this for a coworker
Quote : | "I have a 2002 Lexus GS300 and recently had its 70k mi service done at the lexus dealership. When we had it up on the lift, we noticed that the rear differential was leaking gear fluid. Both the seal and the flange need to be replaced, total parts costing about $100. The problem however is the labor involved. The dealership quoted about 6-7 hours labor and the total estimate was through the roof. I am looking to have this fixed as soon as possible without spending a fortune on it. " |

you probably have to take off numerous exhaust peices to get to the driveshaft (which also has to come off) 12/7/2006 12:30:27 PM |

i always thought royal purple had won the tests and such and would be considered the leading brand...what is so great about the lexus stuff?
seriously though, it is a labor intensive process if the gears need to be re-setup, and it is a lexus. tell your coworker to trade it for a honda... 12/7/2006 12:31:23 PM |

anyone know of a good place to get this done that is reliable and not as expensive as the lexus dealership? 12/7/2006 12:35:34 PM |

you could pick up a new seal and flange and shadetree it to used gear/bearing torque specs (if available), but you risk ruining the gears...even more expensive...
what rears are in these cars? quick google wasnt insightful... 12/7/2006 12:43:43 PM |

I asked my coworker if he had the estimate on him...he said:
Quote : | "..yeah, just not with me, they quoted $800. basically the exhaust has to come off, the driveshaft has to be detatched, the two independent axles have to be detatched. all just to get to the differential. the biggest problem is that it has independent axles, one for the left rear wheel and one for the right rear wheel " |

I used to work at Happy Jap's. Good work, very reasonable prices.
I trust Rex quite a bit. Give him a call @ 467-2884. Tell him Superfly sent ya. He might charge you double, though... 12/7/2006 5:16:23 PM |

^ it transfers power at right angles from the driveshaft to the wheels, otherwise the similarities end, and it takes for fucking ever to take a damn lexus/yota or honda irs diff apart and then set up the clearances when putting it back together 12/8/2006 8:34:39 AM |
