I'm looking at a buying a '03 Jeep Liberty. It has ~55,K miles on it now. How long do Jeeps last in general before they fall apart? Are they as long-lasting as a Toyota or a Honda, or should I expect it to have problems once it reaches 100K?

Yeah, the older ones lasted forever and a day. We had to replace the rear transmission in mine, but nothing else major. It was well over 100,000 miles. Why do you think you see so many old Cherokees on the road?

brought to you by Lutra.

^^^^^ rear transmission?

you mean the transfer case, or do you mean the rear diff?

or do you mean the transmission (particularly the AX-5 manual transmission in 4cyl jeeps)?

My '94 Grand Cherokee with 190,000 miles ran like a champ until I plowed into a tractor at 55 miles per hour. Now it doesn't run.

I had a 94 with the 4.0 with over 220k on it ran fine till the tranny went in it and the body fell apart.

transmission and electrical problems are the biggest concerns.

is the liberty really a "jeep"

or is it just a 4wd chrysler that they figured would sell a couple more units with a jeep nameplate?

^ doesnt say much, i have taken a chrysler minivan on the beach before and it did fine, its more about the driver than the vehicle, and yes, my dad has damn near gotten my truck stuck in a field before and i managed to drive it right out

They had one line of jeeps that included a tent, so when you broke down, you had somewhere to stay.

Ive got a 96 cherokee 4.0 with 196k on it, the only things wrong so far are: water pump replaced at 133k, neutral safety switch(common), and right now Ive got a phantom electrical problem that is draining batteries like a motherfucker (3 completely dead in 1 week).

cherokee's aren't that bad. other than being a unibody, they have the stronger high pinion 30 in the front usually and a majority of them had the 8.25 chrysler axle in the back which isn't bad at all.

i would buy a land rover over a jeep in the luxury models but a D90 just isn't worth it in comparison to a rubicon.

abs = crap d35

no abs = 8.25

97+ 8.25= 29 spline.
