I encourage all of you to give the gift of giving this holiday season. I encourage all of you to help the less fortnuate kids, elderly and poor.

Whether you can donate your time, money, food, clothes or toys, there are plenty of people that could use your help.

The local food bank always needs food and volunteers.
http://www.foodbankcenc.org/virtual_drive/wake1corps.asp

Meals on Wheels is a great charity to help the poor and elderly
http://www.wakemow.org/

Helping Hand Mission assists families on a
one-on-one basis with food, clothing, furniture, and shelter.
Helping Hand Mission Offers Help To:
o Families
o Elderly
o Homeless
o Handicapped
o Disabled
o Low Income
o Victims of Fire
http://www.helpinghandmission.org/

Toys for Tots
http://www.toysfortotsraleigh.org/faq.php

One thing that I do with a friend of mine is feed the homeless. We do this ourselves and not through any organization. It is a really good feeling to give to the needy. It is a great feeling to know your efforts, even small ones, are being appreciated.

Even if you live check to check and cant afford to give a lot of money, you can still give your time to those that need a hand. Please think of others this holiday season and do your part to make someones day a little brighter.

There are several other charities in this area: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=holiday+charities+Raleigh+NC

i hope you can find one to be apart of this year

Hope you don't mind if I hijack your thread for a minute but I want to post another good cause. Whether you are for or against the war going on please support our troops.

Operation: USO Care Package.

With a donation of $25, you can send a service member a package requested supplies (items such as pre-paid worldwide phone cards, baby wipes, travel size toiletries) along with your own personal note thanking them for their service (picture of items below - this picture is a sample - actual items may vary depending on current supplies).

Here's a Facebook group I created that shows you how to Help Strangers Every Day. Not just around the Holiday Season. Please check it out: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2225512738

Even if you don't join the group, please visit http://www.thehungersite.com anyway and let simply your clicks (not your money, not your contact information, nothing but your mouse clicks, on my honor) donate free food, free mammograms, free books, free vitamins and medicines, free dog and cat food to places and people that desperately need them.

Please also consider clicking to preserve real areas of rainforest.

It's like those old commercials used to say when we were kids, "If we all do a little, we can do a lot." This stuff takes about 5 minutes to do every day, which most of you do on a treadmill at least.

If you don't want to donate money, you can always donate time to various places. For anybody in Charlotte, I know there's a place off of 485 (near Westinghouse, exit 1ish) which could use help ... nothing extremely difficult. http://www.samaritanspurse.org/

barnes & nobel has this program over the holidays where you pick up a bookmark with a childs age & sex on it and you pick out a book for them & just purchase the book at the counter and they donate it for you

i had fun doing that and chose 4 books for a good age range

i thought that was pretty cool and never noticed it in previous years

Not really flaming (or flamming for gunzz) because I love the idea of getting more people involved in this stuff.

But I really hate the saying "give the gift of giving"... You aren't giving the gift of giving. You are giving a gift... period.

anyways.. consider this a free bump

^Actually if I had planned to give you something for Christmas but instead used the money to purchase something which I gave to one of these organizations and gave you a card that said I made the donation in your name, that is the gift of giving

The staff here had a huge blanket drive to give to the elderly in Harnett County. Last year 130 elderly people asked for simple things like blankets, shampoo, soap, and lotion from social services. Harnett County's SS could only meet the needs of a few and turned away almost 90 of those people. That is truly sad to me...

I wish I had seen this thread earlier!!! My family and our friends every year in December we do this feeding the homeless or just down on their luck downtown and I've been cooking all morning and would have welcomed volunteers to help serve but I'm leaving in 10 minutes.

Anyways, AWESOME thread. I've got lots of local stuff to add but I'll have to do it later. This is in my top 10 gunzz

Not to throw this topic off-track, but just wanted to bring up something. My ex-wife and I were live-in houseparents for two years at a group home for abused kids. We'd always get truckloads of stuff around the holidays that were surely welcomed, but those resource needs are year-round. We had a group of folks that did a "Christmas in July" thing where there did their donations in the summer to spread the wealth out some. That was awesome.

Anyways, dig deep, and give what time or resources you can to your favorite group. I know they all appreciate it.

Fun Fact
So far this year, people being bored and clicking on the Internet at http://www.thebreastcancersite.com have provided free mammograms to 2,523 women in need.

I bet we'll get more help if I put SAVE BREASTS in big bold letters somewhere in my post.

(I was hoping to get pictures of this in time, but unfortunately, I haven't gotten them yet)

As you guys may or may not know, I was in Honduras for 6 months this year. It's the 2nd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere...it's unspeakable the conditions that most of the people there live in. As a result, the US airbase at Soto Cano participates in numerous humanitarian projects. For example, it wasn't until recently that polio was eliminated in that country, largely due to an immunization program spearheaded by the US military. (I could go on and on about some of the medical conditions found here. Needless to say, there are doctors in the US who go to countries like this to see diseases in such an advanced stage that you wouldn't normally find in the US.)

Back in November or so, Myrtle and her friends at US Bank got together about a dozen large wardrobe-sized boxes of games, toys, food and clothing for children in the Tierra Santa Orphanage in Comayagua, Honduras. This orphanage houses about 100 children. The orphanage really needs all the help it can get, too. This summer, the kids came down with horrible cases of head lice due to the conditions found there. (We finally bought some lice treatment for them and went through the process of eradicating the lice in the orphanage. It's an involved process).

Anyway, thanks to Myrtle, some children in a less fortunate area of the world can have a much more Merry Christmas.

I post organizations and opportunities in my blog as they come up... (as well as other things)... http://ncsulilwolf.blogspot.com/

Here's a few:
Give 2 The Troops
(Recognized by the American Red Cross and US Dept. of Defense)
"...supporting the physical, moral, and spiritual health of America's armed forces in combat zones around the world through letters and care packages"
http://www.Give2TheTroops.org

Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, Inc.
"...NRGRR, Inc., is a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers, who work hard to find loving, 'forever' families for homeless Golden Retrievers."
http://www.goldenrescuenc.org

Feed The Firefighters
"The purpose of Feed The Firefighters is to support firefighters and other emergency personnel who serve the community through their heroic work. It does this by supplying food and other nourishment during emergencies of extended duration and increasing public awareness of the contributions firefighters make to the community."
http://www.feedthefirefighters.com/

Relay For Life
(especially at NCSU!)
March 23, 2007 - Let's make cancer history!
[i]"Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. At the event, we celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back."[/ii]

P.S. anyone with $5 who wants to donate to Relay for Life at NCSU...
https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=190189&lis=1&kntae190189=A3B2C23D99AB4432A62233F4F1FE194A&supId=120634815

It's my personal goal this year to encourage my team to raise $5,000. If everyone on Tdub donates a few bucks... I may accomplish that goal myself
