the other day i met up with optmusprimer to get a part for the rover, and mentioned that suprisingly, nothing major has gone wrong with my sisters land rover.

and ive told a few others, ive pretty much bragged that i got lucky and picked a good rover.

welp, just 5 mins ago my brother calls and says that something major has gone wrong, its dark so hes not sure. either transmission or axle.

havnt seen it yet, but the description 2 of the people gave was that they were taking a right hand turn, and they heard a pop (or loud click) and so they coasted down hill...

my brother said he couldnt even get it to park, but eventually did.

it just revved in every gear. now i was thinking somehow they hit the diff. lock shifter and popped it into N, which is possible if it wasnt fully engaged. and that is something they most likely would miss to try and find out whats up

hmm

check the hi/lo range shifter, make sure its not in nuetral like you said. then get underneath and make sure both driveshafts are still there and look intact.

i highly doubt this next part is possible, but who knows

after that, its going to get expensive/complicated unless you somehow managed to snap the RR axle during normal city driving. if thats what happened, you can lock the CDL and you should be able to get it moving again- if the noise is too bad though dont drive it much. youll want to keep as much of the axle peices out of the differential as possible.

[Edited on December 19, 2006 at 2:07 PM. Reason : RR or LF i suppose, but that would be even weirder]

Similiar thing happen to a camry I had a while back. Was sitting at a stop light on a hill late one night, light turned green, halfway through the intersection there was a loud pop and it wouldn't drive anymore. Don't remember what exactly it was, but it was something in the tranny and I just got a new one from the junk yard.
